There's a whole generation who still think HOWARD THE DUCK was a hugely successful comicbook

--------------------------------------

And look at the film that came from that!

The death of Gwen was a result of a kind of thinking that found its wayinto superhero comics mostly thru the GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW seriesby Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams.

John, Thanks for sharing these thoughts. I think this is a great discussion and one of the best I've participated in the JBF.

When Peter did grow up his cast of characters seemed trapped in the past and couldn't adjust with being older.  They all seem just as pathetic as Peter was but Peter was a womanizer.  Making Peter older made his supporting cast irrelevant to his character but they did try to get them involved within the supervillain plots.  This didn't make any sense to me because his supporting cast were normally distant to what Spider-Man was doing, this is what made his books so much fun.

I read Amazing Spider-man 99 today (managed to snag it on Ebay) and was a bit startled how tight his relationship with Gwen is. He reflects in the issue that he needs a 'grown-up' job to support an eventual wife, and I find the whole tone of the book (and character) quite different from earlier issues.

I'm not sure if there's a point in there.... <g>

Not to completely deviate from the grown up disucssion, but I just fisnished reading Essential Spider-Man 9 the other day, and I thought it was interesting how Spider-Man would always swing to a falling person's resuce rather than using webbing because he didn't want to do to the falling person what he did to Gwen.

I also rediscovered Deb Whtiman, the most unlikable character ever.  SHe isn't a bad character, just the opposite in fact, I just really dislike her.

No, we don't need a grown up Peter Parker.

Why? Because of Spider Man concept of a teenager is far more powerful that the alternative. (the avanger, married with a nice job).

Spider man is one of most sucessfull characters because of his combination of powerful superhero and loser nerd at the same time. Hollywood made 3 movies using that concept.
