The classic Batman costume is one of the best in comics. It's a bit egotistical of these artists to think that they can improve it. The Gary Frank drawing would look pretty good.... if you changed all the bits he's meddled with back to the classic costume. It's like he's embarassed by the idea of Batman wearing shorts over the body-suit.... so he puts him in a wrinkled pair of long johns. Riiiight. Don't like any of the changes. Like his drawings of Bruce Wayne and like him as an artist generally..... but these changes are (a) unnecessary and (b) stink.

Why is Batman the subject of so many of these costume changes and Superman is virtually exempt? Batman is nearly as much of an icon as Superman and debuted but one year later. I'm not saying I want to see Superman with different costumes, I'm just wondering about the general lack of reverence for Batman.

Maybe because Batman IS the costume (and an elaborate one, at that: cape, cowl, long/short bat ears, bat emblem, utility belt, etc...).
Superman was born Superman, to quote David Carradine.

I'm not sure I follow. Shouldn't that give more reason to leave the costume alone?

Hrm. You may have a point there. But there's so much to mess with...while Superman's costume is more...spartan...

I think it's more because the Burton's Batman movie got away with changing it to huge success in the '89 movie. That seemed to give some kind of "green light" that you can tweak Batman's costume and it will still work. I don't know that there was much done to the Batman costume (other than adding the yellow oval) prior to that. And I absolutely hate that Carradine quote/speech about Superman being born Superman. Obviously he (or Tarrantino) never read "Man of Steel." Or if so, they missed the point.

True. It's easier to re-interpret the various elements on Batman's costume.

Hopefully, Tarantino won't be doing any superhero movies.

SER: I think this speech gets unfairly knocked -- it's the *villain's* POV. The villain who destroyed Beatrix Kiddo's life because he refused to accept that she was *really* Beatrix Kiddo, mother and wife, deep down and not *just* Black Mamba, the killer he had created.
That is also key to understand, as the ruthless killer we see in the two films is a reaction to Bill and what he's done to her.
Lex Luthor's speech rejecting that Clark Kent could be Superman in SUPERMAN No. 2 is also spot-on -- for a villain. It not only shows us why Luthor -- despite his intelligence -- can't see through the disguise, it shows us why Luthor is far less a man than Superman.

Not to be a stickler but Man Of Steel IS a re-intepretation of Superman and that Superman is dead. Tarantino could have been referencing Superman's first appearance in Action Comics. As for Batman's design changes I think DC Comics gives their hot shot artists free will in whatever changes that will pump up their egoes. To DC they think by doing this the book will stand out from the rest of the many Bat-titles currently running. Gosh too many spin-off titles at that.

When I was a kid, it was made clear time and again that Superman was the "real" identity, and Clark Kent was the disguise. Bill's speech is an entirely reasonable interpretation of the character as he existed for the three decades prior to Man Of Steel.
