First issue of the X-Men I ever bought and was blown away!  Cyclops was cool and he left the next issue!  Damn.  Also where I discovered this guy named John Byrne.  JB blew me away.  However, I was really converted by JB's Captain America.

The first two super-hero comics I remember reading a a youngster -

I also made this page a while back of the pre-1974 comics that I read early on -

My First Comics

I'm not sure if I was aware of Superman and the Justice League before watching the Super Friends cartoons or vice versa.

My first Marvel, brought back by my Mum when I was laid up sick one morning. I never did get the next issue and had to wait until the Marvel UK weeklies started up to see what happened.

... needless to say, I didn't have the first f---ing clue what the hell was going on in this issue!!!

••

Why not? The issue contains acres of expository captions, plus about two pages recapping the previous issue.

"Writing for the trade" was a couple of decades in the future, and as convoluted as our storylines sometimes became, Chris and I worked with the full awareness that "every issue is the first issue for somebody."

The character is new, a teenager, a superhero and the most recent of such.

Is this a trick question?

...acres of expository captions...

****

Even 30-odd years ago I was struck by how consistently Claremont/JB didn't let any issue go by without giving at least some recap of "the story thus far."

In some ways my favorite issue of that run was #138, where, in having Cyclops exit the team, JB presents a summary of the entire (published) X-Men history up to that point. A marvelous valedictory for the character and JB too!

(No intended slight on your and Chris's storytelling capabilities, JB... more a dig at my own reading comprehensive skills at age 9!  Plus, coming in at the tail end of the story arc and being introduced to the characters for the first time (#142 literally was my very first X-Men issue ever) made for some confusing reading on my part.  Took me a couple more reads before I finally "got it!")

First one I remember buying. Though I had read a whole box full at my Grandmother's house. Including this one:

I wonder if one influenced the purchase of the other?

Mike - The Gil Kane Green Lantern vs. Green Lantern cover is one a classic, so how could you not buy it?
