Tim - Why can't it be about reading AND collecting? People collect stamps, coins, artwork..etc ...so why not comicbooks?

In any case, the fact remains: art (any art) has an
intrinsic value. Mass produced commodities do not, in
whatever abundance, or lack thereof, they are available.

Your "logic" reminds me (yet again) of a TV movie from
the Seventies.

Yes, of course it’s an extrinsic value. I’m trying to speculate on why people put it there, instead of just calling them crazy. But don’t get me wrong, I do think it’s crazy to pay $100,000 for a comic book.

When I use "collecting" above, I'm using it in the obsessive and financially motivated way that seems to pervade comic books.  It's something that bums me out when I get too close to it.  I used to treat all of my books way too preciously, and it starts to feel that you don't own them - they own you.  So i think collecting is about what you focus on.

I find I enjoy it more when I just focus on the stories - I don't stay consistent with most titles and drop it if I don't enjoy it.  Most importantly, I drop something if I am not reading it and just stockpiling issues.  I used to continue buying - now I rate apathy along with distaste.  As a result, I enjoy buying new comics more than I used to.

I certainly collect books.  For comic books I collect trades.  I even have different editions of the same story - especially with the recent trend towards publishing in B&W that gives me a chance to see something familiar in a different way.   In collecting trades, I've managed to choose the only thing in the comic world that seems to decrease in monetary value.  It's part of my ongoing knack to lose money in every endeavor I enter.  But I'm not in it for having something as a financial investment.  I'm in it for teh cool stories.

It's true - I'm barely human.

Tim leaves buffalo sauce I leave cheese doodle stains. Stuffing my face and reading comics. It's a perfect combo!

Tim - I get what you're saying and I generally agree. I'm not collecting comics for the money either. I will admit I've sold some for a pretty penny..most of that money goes into buying more comics though :)

Anyone know where this ranks in terms of most money ever spent on a single comicbook?  What's the most anyone has ever actually paid?  I'd like to see a list of the top dollar values a comic has ever commanded.

I believe the highest price paid so far was $350,000 for Marvel Comics #1; this was a few years ago.

I don't get the whole CGC thing myself, but Steve Geppi stated a few yeas ago that he would pay $1,000,000 for Action Comics #1 in a certain certified grade; something like 9.8 or 10.0; if one even exists.

I don't use plastic bags.  I read comic books when I eat and get buffalo wing sauce on them no matter how much I try not to.

Seal all bad comics in plastic and keep all good comics open and readable.
