Jeez, Bill, JB holding the pitchfork in his drawing hand would kinda defeat the whole purpose of the thing...

You've heard of "...making sacrifices for his art..."?  Well, JB tends to take things rather literally...

I'd better stop now before I give rise to a whole new bunch'a' rumors about our host...HEY!  Keep those fingers movin', JB!  Draw!  DRAW!

<<My nighttime buildings have improved just a tad, haven't they?>>

That was my second thought when this image came up (the first being "Whoa.")  I would go so far to say that they have also improved in the last year or so.  The objects in the windows have depth now rather than looking like shadows on a shade, which is something I never considered until a few nighttime commissions ago.  Nicely done, sir!

The background on the commission is not just better than the original, but two, maybe three times better. I'm getting tired of typing 'your nightscapes are always good' but here it is, once again, magnificent!

You've managed to create the illusion of every window telling a different story. You almost feel you can make out desks, paper-clutter, pot plants (I even see a grand piano and drum kits, but that's just me!).

It also strangely captures for me that haunting loneliness of big cities by night.

I have to admit, I'd thought about commissioning something like this myself. What a good choice!

That's awesome.

I wonder if the same approach could be applied to white/light characters and save JB some ink? Like Lightray, Dazzler or Silver Surfer. Folks who could be rendered in pure white/special effects/shadows.

Some of that is due to the angle on the last few commissions. Looking at
the Gallery, I notice that most, tho certainly not all, of the night shots
tended to be looking UP at the buildings.

Indeed. Not to drift too badly, but I wonder how many people have had a negative childhood reaction to something that they later felt a strong dislike for, without the memory of the earlier reaction. So many people seem unable to articulate a good reason for a strong dislike they may have, even though the dislike is genuine and real to them. Perhaps more biases could be overcome if people just had better memories.

Anyway, enough psycho-babble. A question about the commission: do you find that it's more tiring to work on a single image with heavy blacks like this one, compared to working on multiple images that might, in total, require more inks? Is going over a single image a second (or even a third) time for total coverage going to cause more fatigue?

WOW!

This was a scene I had been tempted to ask for, myself. But I never seriously considered it, since I thought maybe you would have been reluctant to do so much manual inking. Plus, I thought that the inking strokes might have been visible in the piece, where this needs a really solid black for it to work. This was before you started using the huge PITT pens, though. Silly me - this looks perfect!

That would be good to see, JB do that.

I think when Silver Surfer appeared very briefly in one of JRjr's last DD's he drew him with the minimum of lines.

Trying not to being one that  blows my own trumpet, but there's a piece I did of Cloak and Dagger about halfway down on page 828 of the 'What's in your sketchbook' thread that was along those lines.

Outstanding!  I always loved the original cover and I think this one outdoes it.

Beautiful work, JB!  Congratulations to the commissioner!
