"There's a rather notorious shot from the Andru days, where Spider-Man
leaps into (as I recall) the bedroom of a startled young woman, and due to
the blue being missing on the leggings of his costume, looks for all the
world as if he doesn't have pants on."

****

Anyone have a scan of that?

Is that why in some earlier issues Thor appears to be wearing shorts?

I'd be startled too if Spider-Man jumped into my room without pants!

If I were to guess from that cover of Amazing Spider-Man # 149, I'd say the one in the lighter costume is the real Peter Parker as his costume has faded from multiple washings.

I like the multiple-wash solution. Like whenever an new artist changes the costume, bigger eyes, more webbing, etc, the continuity-freak in me justifies it that Peter has simply redesigned his costume a little, maybe because of some 'seen' or 'unseen' costume-shredding action. Or because the colours ran in the wash.

or..... it's just a comic book.

I think I like that explanation best.

The Spider-Man cartoon from the sixties had a red and blue costume, and I suppose it influenced the thinking of plenty of fans of the character, whether they were regular readers of the comic or not. A lot of people familiar with the cartoon, when reading a comic, might see blue with black shadow as opposed to seeing black with blue highlight.

As to the original point being made about "seeing" the correct color, I have that handy mutant ability to know what the intended color of cloth or hair should be in a comic book. Like JB, I never needed to have it explained to me, even as a kid, that highlights were highlights and shadows were shadows, even on items that defied lighting logic, such as Superman's trunks.

I guess most people are familiar with the cartoon than the comics ...
