The Spider-Man cartoon from the sixties had a red and blue costume, and I suppose it influenced the thinking of plenty of fans of the character, whether they were regular readers of the comic or not. A lot of people familiar with the cartoon, when reading a comic, might see blue with black shadow as opposed to seeing black with blue highlight. As to the original point being made about "seeing" the correct color, I have that handy mutant ability to know what the intended color of cloth or hair should be in a comic book. Like JB, I never needed to have it explained to me, even as a kid, that highlights were highlights and shadows were shadows, even on items that defied lighting logic, such as Superman's trunks.
