I think most of us grew up with the blue & red Spider-Man and that image (be it by Romita Sr., Andru, Kane, S. Buscema, etc.) has stuck with us. It was just one aspect of the character (along with Peter Parker's geekiness) which seems to have been dropped/de-emphasized along the way as Spider-Man became popular, and eventually Marvel's flagship character.
Of course Romita Jr. has done a nice job portraying his costume as black & red, and I prefer black & red myself.

Early on, Ditko (or on the first two covers here, Kirby) spotted a lot of blacks, and highlights were colored more of a purple hue and blue, later on he spotted fewer black and the costume was sometimes colored blue -

Romita spotted fewer blacks than Ditko generally did, and by the end of his run the red & blue Spider-Man was the accepted version -

That should've made it much easier to tell which one was the clone!

Let's also not forget the fact that Spider-Man's costume just looks way cooler red and black than red and blue. If he's red and black, his web pattern "bleeds" into the black area, making the costume a more unified whole.

I agree with Christopher there. I think you can critisize someone perhaps for not understanding that the blue is a shade or black highlight, since he misinterprets the picture, but if someone prefers small dots, lines or blue or red to represent the highlights, that's an opinion and it can vary. Added: Or just black.

It depends on what you find when you look for those Spider-Man figures. There appear to be at least four different versions of the current wave of Marvel Universe Spide-Man figures, that all have the same mold, but decidedly different paint jobs. There's red and black, which Keith posted, and which my friend who collects these toys calls, "First appearance Spidey", red and blue which I posted below, and varying black with blue highlights and blue with black highlights versions, and they seem to all be about the same in quantity of distribution, from what I can tell looking for them in Ohio and surrounding areas. There are two differently numbered figures, with different card art as you can see, and some are even posed upside down in the package, but they all seem to be the same molded figure, with the right hand having two middle fingers pressing the websninner.

I think that the "Mego-Like" Marvel Famous Covers Spider-Man was the first Spider-Man figure to use red & black for the classic costume.
