Very peculiar. He literally made Millers Wolverine unreadable for me. There's something very heavy handed about his brush work. I'm pretty sure he inked all of the OHOTMU covers, and JB's Captain America run, which is some of my favorite Cap stuff of all time.

Notable Kevin Nowlan cover. I never really read any of the post JB stuff but always bought the covers Nowlan did. There's a nice run through on the working stages of this cover on Kevin's blog. I guess Kevin's not really into hairy dudes, he gave Puck and Wolverine a nice arm waxing. Good thing he left Walter alone.

I think the peculiar thing about that Byrne/Rubinstein is not the inking - it looks like a very unhappy bunch. A few are smiling but for the most part they have either blank expressions or frowns. In the picture above it almost everyone is smiling and looks happy to be there.

Cool thread!

Can anyone remember/post those B&W sketches of Sasquatch & Vindicator (and maybe other characters?) that used to appear in the inside front cover of certain issues in the mid-'80s? Know what I'm talking about? I always wondered who drew those (Mignola?) and where they were originally from.

I think Rubenstein overpowers Byrne.

In Mr. Rubenstein's defense, to my eye, that looks like an unused cover idea for OHOTMU that was total breakdownish. It's so heavy handed that I can't imagine Joe R. destroying JB's line like that. The real OHOTMU covers were much better. This is a piece that was never meant to see print, I would guess....

We did have some nice Jim Lee work in Alpha Flight as well.  It wasn't usually the art that turned me off but it seemed like they had a lot of trouble finding a writer that really got the characters.

Dave: That's an interesting observation . Anyway, I do think Rubinstein has done a better inking job in other drawings ...
