If any of the higher-ups get let go from Marvel and want to know why, Disney can just say "It's magic, we don't have to explain it".

Better distribution as in we'll see them in more places than just comic shops, Walmart, and bookstores? I can't remember the last time I saw a Disney comic in a convenience store, gas station, or grocery store. They used to be as ubiquitous as Archie Comics and, well, Marvel. I understand people getting pumped up about Disney buying Marvel, but some expectations have to be kept in check. Disney hasn't done much of anything with distribution re: their own characters in comic books and Marvel is firmly entrenched in the direct market. I don't see any of that changing simply because Disney bought Marvel.

True, plus Disney cancelled the license with Gemstone so the publishing aspect may not be as crucial right now. Besides, Marvel was just purchased and the Anti-Trust review hasn't completed yet, so it'll be some time before we see the impact of this acquisition. The comics may act as loss leaders for their licensing potential.

I think it might be good in that characters that are perceived by most of the general population for kids, would be returned to a certain level of wholesomeness.
I don't think that the characters would necessarily be put into the Harvey or Archie type of comic books, but swearing or overt sex wouldn't be good for the bottom line. You can have mature, adult type stories without all the crap that has been foisted on comics in recent years.
Disney might also bring a certain level of professionalism to the editorial process that is lacking.
Who knows, guess we'll find out. I only hope that, from a purely selfish point of view, that the commissions can keep coming out. Past precedence says they will continue, but like others have said, Disney is very, very protective of their properties.

Those are horrible news.
Disney will most certainly close down Marvel publishing arm. Disney doesn't publish comics, it licenses otherpublishers to do so. And I very much doubt they will keep Marvel'spublishing division (a low profit, heavy spending division) on thecurrent economic climate.NO publisher,not even DC, has got the money to license AND publish as many books asMarvel does, so the direct market will take a hit. And the direct market is already on its last legs. Just look at how many things Diamond is refusing to distribute!
If the direct marvet falls, pretty much all the US comics industry will follow. That means A LOT of artists we admire will be out of work. |

Consolidating to publish fewer titles may not be a bad thing. Plus, Disney closing down the publishing arm is just speculation. With Marvel having a history in publishing and a strong presence in the Direct Market, the properties would still be available in that form for quite awhile, in my opinion.

Disney doesn't publish comics with their own character. Doesn't publish comics with the CrossGen characters they bought. What makes you think they will do it with Marvel characters?
Seriously, I WOULD bet money that Marvel's publishing arm won't be with us by 2011!
