Is Quesada gradually being phased out as EIC (we can only hope)? Is Marvel planning on shutting down the publishing division and shifting their staff to other divisions within their company?

************

I can't see why either of those things would happen. Marvel's publishing arm is quite profitable and has seen substantial growth during Quesada's tenure. Why would Disney fix a business model that isn't broken? My guess is that things will be Business As Usual, as far as us readers are concerned.

Have you ever worked in a big company, let alone a global corporation like Disney?  And just because Marvel is making money right now, that doesn't mean the business model isn't broken.

Yes, I've worked for a big company. Still do. I've found they like making money. It's how they became big companies in the first place.

Disney will do what they do best: License.

If Disney outsources the Marvel characters, it will be DC comics who gets the licanse and starts publishing comics of the Marvel characters.  Mark my words. Didio can't resist.

Sorry to disappoint some folk, but Disney is planning on leaving Marvel's publishing arm pretty much as it is. "If it ain't broke" and all that.

It is broke.  As is DC.  It won't be fixed until comic books are mass market items again.

Nathan Greno, I will use JB words to answer your post:

"Stop thinking like comicbook fans. You can be damn sure Disney isn't."

Marvel's publishing arm is quite profitable and has seen substantial growth during Quesada's tenure. Why would Disney fix a business model that isn't broken?

••

Marvel is an appalling business model. They target a shrinking audience, bombard the marketplace with stunts designed to create transient upticks in sales, and pride themselves on ever diminishing returns. Not to mention the fact that Marvel's "profits" compared to Disney's are beyond microscopic. This is not something that is going to add substantially to Disney's coffers.

+++++

Sorry to disappoint some folk, but Disney is planning on leaving Marvel's publishing arm pretty much as it is. "If it ain't broke" and all that.

••

In 1970, UNCANNY X-MEN was canceled selling around 230,000. Currently, as one of Marvel's "best sellers" it is lucky to tick over 100,000.

What, by your reasoning, "ain't broke"?

Marvel publishing makes money. Disney would lose money by selling a license for the publishing for an amount less than Marvel publishing currently makes.

••

And there's that bizarro economics again! Currently, Disney is not making one single cent off Marvel Comics, the publishing house. If they shut down the publishing house following the completion of this acquisition, they will still be making not one single cent off Marvel Comics the publishing house. There is no "loss".

What percentage of the $4,000,000,000 this deal is supposedly costing Disney do you think they expect to recoup from publishing comics?

That's more a reflection of the comic industry in general though, surely, rather than Marvel specifically? If you look at Marvel purely within the comic book industry, they're the market leaders, consistently outselling DC. Yes, sales suck compared to the 70s and 80s, but they do for all comic publishers, not just Marvel. And they'll continue to hover around the 100k mark until the product is back in the "real world" as well as the direct market specialist market.
