They will "offer" the Marvel publishing business to the big publishing houses and the highest bid wins. Disney will have Royalties to show in their balance sheets and any concern about "head count" or managing a publish House. --------------- This won't happen. Marvel publishing makes money. Disney would lose money by selling a license for the publishing for an amount less than Marvel publishing currently makes. And no one is going to pay Disney an equivalent amount to publish Marvel comics to, what, maybe sell more comics than the long-running industry leader? Sorry, the math doesn't work for Disney to shitcan Marvel publishing.

Licensing, however, would allow Disney to save a huge amount of money in the very near term by eliminating Marvel's publishing division while generating pure profit. Sometimes companies prefer to spend $0 to make $10 million than spending $10 million to make $30 million. Mike

You're not taking into account the costs of dismantling Marvel's publishing operation. They own not one but two working printing operations. The second one, on the west coast, is why they bought out Malibu. Not too mention the distribution channels Marvel has set up, etc. Overhauling all that isn't free, and requires a lot more than just, 'Hey, we could make more licensing this stuff...'
Again, Marvel has all of this already established and running. They're running a profitable, and increasingly profitable publishing division if you look at the figures from the last five years. Disney would be stupid to mess with that at this point. They don't have to spend any money to make it, they're just going to sit back and collect Marvel's revenue stream.
If Marvel's publishing division ever becomes unprofitable, that'll be a different story.

I don't think Disney would shut down Marvel publishing. The inevitable fan hatred will harm future support for Marvel movies.

"The inevitable fan hatred will harm future support for Marvel movies." Marvel's best selling "event book" in July sold less than 200,000 copies. So even if ever single one of those copies = a ticket sale, that's a Marvel movie that makes less than 2 million dollars at the box office. Mike

Here's something to ponder. Before the Disney deal happened, Quesada was promoted to creative head of Marvel animation in addition to his duties as EIC. Does anyone have any idea what this could mean for the publishing division? Is Quesada gradually being phased out as EIC (we can only hope)? Is Marvel planning on shutting down the publishing division and shifting their staff to other divisions within their company?
