Somewhat ironic in that Marvel under Quesada does more mucking around and riffing on past history than any other time at Marvel. Sure, I wouldn't call what the current regime does "love letters," but the company's writers for the most part won't stop messing with the old history and ripping off the old ideas instead of creating truly original new adventures.

--------------------------------------

Exhibits A and B, of course, being Civil War and Dark Reign, which are both retreads of ideas contained originally in Acts of Vengeance.  The funny thing being that although they swiped the ideas, they apparently didn't pay attention to the characters.  It was Reed and the FF who testified before Congress and got the Superhuman Registration Act overturned the first time they tried to pass, then Reed turns around and spearheads the effort.

I will say, though, that there have been a few nice glimmers in the midst of the Dark Reign muck, out of the 'Cabal' storyline, namely Emma Frost becoming a villain again, and the stuff they've been doing with Doom, Namor, and Loki.

Well, he is pretty flexible.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

<<<Emma Frost becoming a villain again>>>

What does that mean for Scott Summers? Is Jean (or Madelyne Pryor) coming back into the picture? (I haven't been following the X-books lately.)

++++

Matt, writing new stories for an all ages crowd that uses characters as they had been established for 40 years is SO yesterday. Taking those same characters, telling the same stories, but changing the characters so that they barely resemble themselves, and making the stories more adult so a new generation of grown ups that has never read comics might get a wild hair and pick one up after 40 years of life, that's modern.

"this rather taxes the term "rebel", doesn't it?"

They're rebels with a clause.

Bill Jemas (COO and president of publishing, 2000–2004): Marvel Comics were almost unintelligible. Each new story tied into every other story for 40 years. The learning curve was so steep that it was all but impossible to sell comics to kids.

Yeah, and Bill Jemas surely helped Marvel in being more appealing for kids.

Heh.

My 7 year old does. I tried to get him into the Marvel Adventures line, but he feels like he's being talked down to. (his words, not mine.) But he digs Wayne Osborne and JB's FX series. He thinks it's freakin' cool! (again, his words, not mine).

I will let him know that he must stop reading comics when he reaches 8.

You watch! Next year he'll stop, cold turkey, and then pick up again when he's 9!
