Every time I hear Spider-Man referred to as "street level", or some equivalent, I have images of barn doors and escaped horses in my head. Spider-Man SHOULD be "street level" -- but the only way he is any more is because people SAY he is. The weight of evidence is very much to the contrary.

And to think, when Howard and I kicked around the idea of "fixing"Spider-Man using the Shaper of Worlds, Bob Harras said that it was too"cosmic" for Spider-Man, who is a "street level" character. === Was Harras the EIC when Larson was drawing Spider-Man, when Spider-Man had Captain Universe's cosmic power, or was that prior to his tenure? (Fixed the quote -- got cut and pasted before edited it! - JB)

It was during Acts of Vengeance, so I think DeFalco was probably EiC at the time.
Anyway, one of the cool things about Spider-Man is that he spans both worlds. He can hang around with the FF but also mix it up with the Punisher.

When we think about all the stuff that's been done with Spider-Man, it's very hard to find any traces of the truly "down to earth" character Stan and Steve created. Heck, when I was Art Robot on MARVEL TEAM-UP he went to the MOON! You don't get a whole lot less "down to earth" than that!Problem is, it's been so long since Spider-Man was TRULY "street level" that people tend to accept all the absurdities that have attached themselves. (Even Stan had him fighting aliens -- but Stan had EVERYONE fighting aliens! And Roger Stern retconned that away, anyway!)

<<<So Gwen AND MJ were cloned? Anybody else? Aunt May? Jonah? Robbie?Talk about a slippery slope!>>> Hey, we were desperate. We had a lot of mandates from on high to fulfill as we tried to get out of the Clone Saga, and that was one of the more elegant solutions suggested. Hell, I think we were taking suggestions from the CUSTODIAL STAFF by that point. But at least we knew not to go with the Mephisto idea...

- he also, as I mentioned, had the power of Captain Universe
- he had encounters with the Hulk, Medusa, the Juggernaut, the Frightful Four, Morlun (an ancient predator of...spider-men, ugh), etc.
- he went to the Beyonder's planet and got an alien symbiote for a costume, then had to fight that costume (and its children)
- he went to the Negative Zone and took up a new identity
- he has a few enemies who are more "science-level" than "street level,", e.g. Doc Ock and the Lizard
I'm sure there's lots more.

Agreed. It's not just fighting a Herald of Galactus, it's that he's been involved in many stories that no one could consider "street level". Say what you want about Daredevil, but his journey has been much more street level than Spider-Man. His encounters with more universal stories are the exception whereas Spider-Man's tend to be the rule because of his popularity. Once you're a member of the Avengers, you are no longer a street level hero.

Well heck now Spider-Man is part of the Avengers. Definitely not a street level team of heroes.

Yeah, it seems a lot of the Marvel EIC's have started out doing SOME good. But I think the EIC position needs to be one with term limits. After a while, each EIC can't seem to help themselves on trying to "fix" what isn't broken.

I definitely need to make my sarcasm more obvious. I was sort of using the Firelord fight as a summation/representation.
