We're either of the Crusaders teams evil? I thought they were both good groups that ended up battling the good guys anyway.
They were good guys who were mislead. In fact Dyna-Mite turned out to be Spitfire's and Union Jack's(2) missing brther if I recall. ANd in WhatIf #4 (1st series) it was revealed that the story took place on our Marvel earth and that Spirit of '76 took over Captain America's role after he "died' in WW2.

Back in 1997, the Legion finally returned the favor for the Imperial Guard,
introducing a team of X-Men dopplegangers.

Cool Alan Davis art. And interesting how the "Cyclops" guy has elements of Nightcrawler's costume. Wonder who the red guy is a parody of.

----------------------------------
The ones in Freedom Force were a mixed bag. The leader/Cap doppleganger turned out to be a Freedom Force villain in disguise, but the others seem to have been (at least mostly) misled.

Freedom Fighters, not Freedom Force. Freedom Force was the superhero videogame that came out some years back.
The ones in the Invaders were likewise just a group being misled by a German agent. Two of whom went on to play larger roles than just being a one-off team to fight the title team. Dyna-mite hung around and served as the sub-plot that would bring in Brian Falsworth as Union Jack and introduce the Destroyer into Marvel continuity. Spirit of '76 later went on to replace Captain America (never quite understood why he was killed off and then having the Patriot take over the role, seems to complicate what was a rather simple retcon).

Freedom Force was also the name given to Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants when they worked for the government.

Alongside the Champions of Angor were the villains that were Dr. Doom, Dr. Octopus, Sabertooth and Dormamu clones

Blame Roy Thomas' OCD tendencies, I think. The Patriot last
appeared in Marvel Mystery Comics #74 in July of 1946. Steve
Rogers went missing in 1945 before the end of the war. So there
is a gap of about a year in which the Patriot couldn't be Cap (since he
was still the Patriot) yet Steve Rogers was also no longer Cap.
The Spirit of 76 was slotted in to fill that gap.
I suppose another solution would have been to just make the Spirit of
76 the Cap substitute for the duration of the 40's and not even involve
the Patriot, but I guess then they'd lose the drama of the Spirit of
76's death.
Regarding the DC Crusaders... Steve is right, Americommando was villain
the Red Ghost in disguise. The other members were comic book fans
whom the Red Ghost recruited at a convention and transformed into
super-powered heroes. It's never explained how the Red Ghost
accomplished this transformation, or why he would choose non-criminal
comic book fans to use as his subjects. The four comic fans are
based on Roy Thomas, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman and Archie Goodwin, both in
name and likeness.

These other examples posted here are quite interesting, and seeing the Freedom Fighter's cover (from an earlier post) took me back to when I was a kid. I totally forgot about that issue, AND I even owned it as a kid! I am blown away by what I have read here (such as the Crusaders in the Invaders being counterparts to the Freedom Fighters), because I was around 13 when those issues came out and did put two and two together. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this!
