I think this question may have been asked and gone unanswered earlier, but what exactly was Hank McCoy's mutant power? High I.Q. doesn't seem to fall into the mutant power category, and natural agility doesn't quite seem like a power or a mutation. Are Hank's oversized hands and feet what identify him as a mutant?

His hands and feet, sure, especially with the way he was able to hang onto walls with just his toes. But I wouldn't call Hank's agility merely natural. Plus, he had greater than human strength.

Well, he could hang from a bar upside down by his feet, and I've seem him go up the side of a building bare-handed, and bare-foot! I think it was agility, enhanced strength, and a bit of the "ape-like" appearance of his appendages. He was a pretty burly guy.

I guess that sounds right. A lot of mutant powers come in the "grab bag" variety, with one main mutation that comes with a host of side benefits and abilities. Hank's got superhuman strength, agility, and oversized appendages that allow him to make the best use of those other abilities, and unrelated to all of that, he's one of the smartest people on the entire planet.

For that matter, Nightcrawler had a "grab bag" of abilities too: teleportation, greater than normal agility and the ability to blend into shadow.

Back in X-MEN #3, Hank stood toe-to-toe with a gorilla!
Back then in the days of reasonably low-powered superheroes, this would make the Beast quite strong among any of the Marvel characters. Just think of what it would take to stand up to a full-grown great ape!

Can't help but notice Hank's misspelling in that panel.

What is that little white hand growing out of the gorilla's right middle finger?

Looks like a scroll cursor (or whatever they're called); screen cap picked it up.

That's an interesting variant on what is commonly known as
as the "typesetter's nightmare". It doesn't usually occur in
in hand-lettering and as a rule we don't usually see
see misspelling involved.

Chris Claremont said at MOC last year that for issue 1 of the Wolverine mini with Frank Miller he wrote his typical 21 page plot for a 22 page issue. By the time they did issue 4, he talked to Frank on the phone, then wrote a one page plot to show the editor.
Claremont is very wordy usually. Of course, Stan Lee and Mark Gruenwald could also be... so wordiness alone isn't bad. Claremont's weakness is the same words being used over and over coming out of different characters mouths. But hey, you make your choices, then you live with them...

teleportation, greater than normal agility and the ability to blend into

Not to mention the physical mutations on top of that--prehensile tail,
oversized feet and hands adapted for acrobatics, fangs, blue coloring...and
he could stick to walls, too! I think that's the biggest collection of mutations
in a single X-character (barring any characters whose powers are designed
to directly adapt to other characters or their surroundings).
