When he was gray, the Beast was strong enough to go toe to toe with
Iron Man. He also healed from bullet wounds within seconds. He lost
these powers when his fur turned black.

I first met Beast as a member if the Avengers, but prefer the furless
X-Man who was fond of using "big words" when simpler ones would
do. I think of that guy as "Hank"...

Essential Classic X-Men #3 was my forst opportunity to read the Beast Amazing Adventure stories.  They changed his mental state and powers almost every issue.  And the origin of his furry state- he did it to himself so he wouldn't be recognized, but stayed too long and couldn't turn back- is just a little lame to me.

They finished the Vera story in the Hulk, but did they ever finish the story of his other girlfriend (Linda)?  And the Brand guys who were evil?

I'm 41, so I've only "known" the furry Beast, but I still prefer the original
Beast. He was by far my favorite character when I re-read the early X-Men.

After reading JB's comment I went back and reread the first furry Beast story,
and the Marvel monster influence is pretty obvious. It's very much a
werewolf or Jeckyl and Hyde story, where, for whatever reason, they chose to
use an established character rather than creating a new one. That was
probably a pretty smart decision given that most of the other Marvel
monster characters are long gone.

It wasn't for lack of trying. JMS emphasized (or over-emphasized) the "spider" in Spider-Man and until recently, Iron Man could retract his armor into his bones.

When did his fur turn black?

According to The Marvel Universe, the Beast is blue-black and Nightcrawler
is indigo.

I guess that a safety net with them being referenced to being blue or black.

In Amazing Adventures 15, the Beast wakes up from a nightmare and finds
that he's turned "black."

And if you hadn't figured it what Marvel was doing with the character yet:

I did like that first little story in Amazing Adventures.  Some solid work by Conway and Tom Sutton.  I always loved the Beast in the Avengers.  Figured at some point in time they would make him original again for good.  Probably should have left him that way in X-Factor.

I'd forgotten all about the Beast turning "black"! So, once again, his blue fur is a combination of blacks getting dropped in the inks, and writers writing to it. Kind of how Stan fell into that weird habit of having characters in the stories refer to the Silver Surfer as "white".

Sad thing is, it often only takes one or two instances for mistakes to become canon. Like how I've mentioned about having to fight to get Darkseid restored to his proper colors after his arms and legs turned pink. But it really is frustrating when writers -- who, after all, are scripting black and white pages! -- start making color references that are wrong, and those become canon, too.

Gray Beast becomes black -- almost logical, Black becomes blue -- just sloppy!

When I was growing up, a cousin of my friend was convinced that there were two Beasts, the hairless Beast of the X-Men and the "blue" Beast from the Avengers.

There are about three generations of comics fans who each have there own "Beast," it seems.

The Silver-Age (nearly) hairless Beast of The X-Men fans. Hank was shown as being an intellectual with incredible physical dexterity and enlarged hands and feet.

The 1970's/1980's blue-furred Beast (I know he wasn't always blue, but the period where he was gray/black was fairly short) who was a member of The Avengers, was pals with Wonder Man, was a lady-killer, and all-around fun-loving guy.

The 1990's Beast which most fans of this generation first saw in the FOX cartoon series, who had the basic appearance of the 1970's furry Beast, but with Wolverine muttonchops, and he was back to being an intellectual speaking in big words.
