Stan has said many times that it was "X" for "Extra". Originally, he wanted to
call the book THE MUTANTS, and came up with X-MEN, based on this, when
his bosses said no one would know what a mutant was. They were probably
right.

And I didn't know what 'uncanny' meant, but I knew it sounded cool.

Mark Twain is supposed to have remarked upon his intent to copyright the
alphabet. Thus, no one could ever write anything again without paying him
for the rights, since everything they wrote would just be transposing his
property.

JB:

Funny story there --- When Frank Miller was doingthe Wolverine miniseries with Chris he looked at how Chris scripted myX-Men pages (on which it seemed I could never quite leave him enoughspace for captions and balloons no matter how much space I left open),and so left acres of empty space on his pages. Chris, tho, looked atthe terse, sparse dialog Frank used on DAREDEVIL and decided to emulatethat, resulting in acres of space that remainedempty -- and fans and critics, who did not know the behind the scenesstory, singing the praises of this "bold new graphic style".

This was a few pages back, but it bears comment. This story may be the  definition of a "happy accident." Thanks for sharing it, JB.

When I was growing up, a cousin of my friend was convinced that there were two Beasts, the hairless Beast of the X-Men and the "blue" Beast from the Avengers.

Little did he know then, there are Beasts on Earths 12, 110, 161, 296, 616, 721, 763, 938, 811, 2122, 1031, 1038, 1081, 1295, 1610, 1815, 2149, 2189, 6141, 7964, 8545, 8649, 9105, 9670, 9997, 10005, 11052, 15104, 22490, 58163, 70105, 77995, 80920, 90210, 92100, 92131, 93246 and 971023!

That’s thirty-eight Beasts, but with that Earth 971023 there I guess you can tell him there’s actually one million Beasts, not just two: Marvel haven’t got around to writing about all of them yet, but they seem to be working on it.

One of the aspects of comics lore that most puzzle me.

Nothing really puzzling about it, Johan. It's just one more symptom of creative bancruptcy.

Yes, I think he said exactly the same in an interview with Kevin Smith.

While I like having well defined powers (either one or in keeping with a theme), I don't fetishize the one "extra" power of mutants.  If it's kept within reason, it's OK .  To me, Nightcrawler's power is the teleportation.  All the extra physical stuff is a "natural" product of his bizarre physical form.  Yeah, it's a superpower (just like the Beast's primate-like abilities), but not too much.  As for being invisible in shadows, I simply took that to mean since he is naturally dark, Nightcrawler easily blends into the darkness so he is not seen.  Didn't realize it was meant to be literal.

As for the Beast, I too, thought for a long time that the X-Men Beast and Avengers Beast were two separate characters.  I had to read comics for about a year until I picked up enough references that I figured out they were the same.

Arc -- not trying to be snarky, here, but do you ever read ahead to see if a question has already been answered before you post your own response?
