For me, the worst part about Kurt's revised origin is the fact that the
pitchfork wielding crowd we meet in his debut is now RIGHT. The whole
point of that scene is that appearances can be deceiving; he may look like a
demon, but he's actually just a mutant!

Oh, no, wait. Turns out he's a demon after all. Carry on.

eh, don't say i like it, but it makes sense if it's along the lines of the explaintion of how Warlock or Longshot are mutants - something in their genetic code made them Different from the rest of their species - they aren't human, but they are a mutation from

------

From my rereading of the story just now and I curse myself for putting myself through that again. Once was far more than enough, I think his people the Neyaphem were basically the Morlocks of biblical times. Mutant's who look so different from other humans they were thought of as demons.

Warlock is a mutant amongst his people but he still looks like and shares the same power as them. Azazel's people all look different and have unique powers from each other. *edited to add* Well some share the same power, and one of the female Neyaphem looks very similiar to Nightcrawler.

Here is a scan of something Azazel says, it's one of a few times he calls himself a mutant.

I hope the X-Men smacked Azazel just for putting "air quotes" around "every other phrase" that he tossed around "while casually chatting" with "the X-Men."

You know, when Claremont gets long winded, and even when he uses the same phrases over and over, at least I can understand what he's saying.

Nightcrawler may be a lot different from the other X-Men, but he's just soooo cool!  I don't understand why he didn't become the standout of the X-Men.  They should have just written Wolverine out*.

* I kid!  Only because I know it was in the works to get rid of Wolverine before some Canuck joined the creative team.  But I really do like Nightcrawler better!

One year suspension to Mike Howell for posting a panel from Austen's X-Men run!

Unless it's no longer canon, the demon Azazel is his father as written by Chuck Austen.  Terrible story.

Honest question: has there ever been any other kind written by Austen? I don't want to knock anybody, but just, wow.

Must they defecate on every character? Hyperbole, perhaps, but it sure feels like it.

And that's not actually Kandor, it's a same-scale model of Kandor that now
has an alien race living in it who happen to be that tiny naturally. . .

Not anymore...it's back to tiny Kryptonians.

Well, Brad, if you were not so eager to "correct" me, you would notice that
my comment ends with an ellipsis, which means "information omitted".

And you might also recall that MAN OF STEEL wiped out that whole
convoluted storyline anyway. Whatever is happening in the books now, it's a
NEW and SEPARATE mess!

In high school I read a story called "The Destroyers". It's about a teenage
gang in England, before WW2 as I recall. They get it into their heads to
destroy a man's house, and so one weekend when he is away they break in
and literally destroy it -- they actually cause the whole thing to collapse
leaving nothing but the outer brick shell.

When I look at the present state of the American comicbook industry, the
superhero genre in particular, I find myself reminded of that story. Those
who cannot truly create often feel driven to destroy.

I wasn't trying to correct, just pointing out the more things change, the more they're the same kind of thing.  I apologize if it came out that way.

I appreciate that you had pared down the Superman mythos in Man of Steel.  While at first I was shocked by how much you stripped away, having grown up with all the 70's Superman comics.  By the end of the story I was glad for the change, made for a stronger Superman.

Stan defined mutants as people with AN "extra" power. That's what the X stands for (not "Xavier".)

My understanding was they had an eXtra "mutant gene" in their DNA make up. One that generally didn't activate until around roughly puberty.
