You have excellent control of those PITT pens, sir; the appearance of textures you achieve with mere ink on paper is remarkable. This confrontation must be taking place in Fawcett City -- those backgrounds are not dark & gritty enough to be New York.
Love your take on Mary's costume, but -- was she promoted to Admiral Marvel? Aren't there too many armbands?

••
The arm bands do not denote rank.

Nice job, JB. No one draws super folk in "the real world" quite like you!

My apologies, JB, a misunderstanding or misinterpretation on my part; C.C.Beck always described them as military armbands, and insisted that there were five - no more, no less - although Cap's many other artists did not observe this too diligently.
At any rate, another splendid commission; congrats (tinged with envy) to the lucky owner.

Incidentally, I chose Mr. Mind as the villain for this, when Dave left it open to me, largely because he is a character I have literally never drawn before. Not even a doodle in a sketchbook. This got me thinking about characters who have turned up in commission that I have not handled in any form before, not even on WHO'S WHO or OHOTMU covers. There's a "fun" challenge for those of you who know my career better than I do (ie, most of you!). Which characters did I draw in commission pieces that I had literally never drawn before -- at least, that you would have seen published. (I don't expect you to be clairvoyant!) Obviously there are the likes of Mr. Mind, Robot Archie, the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents -- but who else?

Hm...I think my last New Gods commission (the original "Don't Bug Me!" had a couple characters you hadn't done before: Mantis and Forager. Unless they made a really brief appearance in your 4th World series that I totally forgot!
I love challenges that send me off to the gallery!

Great piece JB. My girlfriend likes it too. She says it's nice to see Mary NOT drawn as either the shrinking violet little girl, or as the sex kitten, but just as a woman who can get the job done.

About that "thousand lines" comment on the 1st page...
I've found that I use something similar myself when inking my own sketches. I used to do as Terry did and used a crowquill pen for most inking work, but as my skills in using dip pens and India ink wells have more or less diminished with the lack of practice, I've stuck to rapidograph-style Microns and PITT markers as my default instrument these days. I've developed something of a reluctance to take up actual brushwork, other than filling in large black areas.
Very good stuff, JB. I kind of wish they never did what they did with Mary in recent DC comics.
