Wallace Sears: I'll be picking up both books. Sal draws a great Hulk. Does anyone know whether or not Ron Frenz was influenced by Mr. Buscema?

---

Ron Frenz is indeed a HUGE fan of Sal's work and counts him as one of his major influence.  He sais so in many interviews and also mentions his admiration for the man in the special Buscema-tribute podcast that the spidermancrawlspace.com recorded a few months ago.  In that podcast, Ron said - and I paraphrase here - that his current pencilling style, seen on Spider-Girl, is Buscema-influenced quite heavily.

Sal Buscema is my all-time favorite penciller/inker.  I had the privilege of talking to him during the aforementioned podcast and that was one of the greatest moments of my life.  I also own a kick ass Spider-Man versus Doctor Octopus commission that he did earlier this year.  I'm gonna be all over that book when it comes out.

JB (in part): "Legend has it there is/was a third Buscema brother whom John referred to as "the real artist in the family".

Who the heck do those Buscemas think they are - the Summers?*

*Didn't someone who worked on x-Men say that there was a joke going around Marvel that there was a third Summers brother who, since the boys' powers manifested themselves at the onset of manhood, hit puberty and exploded?

Sal (and John to a lesser extent, thanks to his stint on Wolverine) didn't contribute to just one big Marvel gun: The X-Men. They drew a couple of issues and a couple of limited series, but they never really got into the team. I think they could have produced some very high quality work there.
Sal is one of the greats. He is the first artist whose work picked my interest. His Captain America, Rom, Hulk and Avengers are among my favorite runs ever.
If I run across the book, I will probably buy it.

Ron Frenz will neither confirm nor deny it, but the rumor is that he was bitten by a radioactive Sal Buscema...

Sal Buscema is a wonderful artist.  I was honored to meet him at a local convention at the Hero Initiative booth (back when it was still called ACTOR) and he was doing sketches when someone made a donation.  He did a wonderful Captain America head sketch and personalized it for me.

I was amazed at how fluid his drawing was and made the stupid comment that he makes it look so easy.  He just smiled and said how it really is easy but for me to not tell anyone so he can keep his job!

I consider Sal Buscema to be one of the unsung heroes of Marvel. I didn't really start to appreciate his work until I saw him on the tail end of Simonson's Thor run....maybe because that was the first time I had seen him ink himself.

I got to work with Sal on what may well be the last Hulk story he's drawn
to date--a 10-page Hulk mini-comic, featuring a Hulk/Abomination
slugfest, that was included in a VHS release of the Hulk cartoon from the
early 1990s.

An absolute BLAST, as you can probably imagine.

I mean, Sal Buscema, drawing a Hulk story that I wrote?!?!?!?

(I wish we had gotten him for that RAMPAGING HULK comic we did in
1998. It might not have been enough to save the book from cancellation,
but it would probably would have been a much happier experience.)

Big fan.  Discovered him on Hulk, like many of you here, and loved his long run (100 or more issues) on Spectacular Spider-Man.  ROM was another favorite.  I'll definitely be looking for this book when it's published.

I discovered Sal Buscema on ROM, he's the reason I love that comic so much.  It was also the first Marvel comic I started buying on a regular basis.  ROM 10 it was. In fact that issue was when I first discovered comic shops and that you could buy back issues!  ROM was the first title I bought back issues for.  Great artist.
