Back in the '80's there were a number of alternante/independent comics being published, with most of them being in black and white, and these are just a few examples of them.  Some were successful (such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), but compared to the "Big" comic book companies, these comics were not always the best in regards to artwork or quality, but they were, in my opinion, beacons of hope (or perhaps opportuntiy) for many would-be artists/writers to get their own creations published and out there for all to see.

Not having collected comics since the mid '90's I don't know if comics like these are still around, but I'm guessing they are not due to the bubble bursting in the '90's, causing many comic book companies to go out of business.  I feel this is a shame, since it was a creative outlet for many.  Even though there are people today producing comic books for the Internet (electronic comics), to me this is not the same, since part of reading a comic book is being able to hold it, with the artwork right in your face, mixed the smell of the paper/printing (you know what I am referring to).

These comics books bring back good memories for me and I am sure for many of you.  I was glad to see one of our own here get his opportunity to have his story produced with Mr. Byrne's artwork (FX), which gives me hope that a story I am working on will someday see print, not with one of the bigger companies, but as an "alternate" comic book publication.

Edited because the line of titles was so long, you had to side scroll to read the text below it.  Fixed. ~ Matt

I bought Boris The Bear! Thought it was fantastic at the time. I was flipping through a couple of issues a few years ago... didn't seem to age well.

I enjoyed quite a few independent/smallpress/alternate comics in the 80's. None of which are pictured here! Some of these are pure dreck!

Of the above shown, I've only heard of Boris The Bear. Which I've never read.

I remember an article on Hero Alliance in Comics Scene Magazine. The Bart Sears art blew me away. When I finally got to a comic shop on a visit to the big city and got my hands on those issues, boy was I ever let down! Sears drew none of them and I think there was some nudity so I wasn't allowed to buy them.

Terraformers looks kind of cool. I guess it's Kelley Jones? It looks like his early work.

Over here, we had these:

Yes, the Terraformers is Kelly Jones and the Eradicators is Ron Lim.  Kelly Jones also did a comic called "Chrome".  Dragonforce is done by Dale Keown.  As mentioned in my intro., I know many of the independent comics were not top quality, but it was an opportunity for many.  I've seen many of your's artworks and would love to see you get your own independent comics.

Um, Bart Sears did do the art on some of Hero Alliance and I think Ron Lim took over for the last issue. The art wasn't the problem with that book and the story was okay (though I couldn't get past the fact that the Superman-analogue was named Victor and his real name was Victor. Either a way too clever mocking of Superman/Clark Kent, or just way too stupid).

I really liked Comico's ELEMENTALS while Willingham was doing it.

Funny , when I read the thread title, I was thinking about Pacific, Eclipse,
Red Circle, Eagle and First, but they were all mostly early to mid Eighties
companies.  The titles above are mostly late Eighties.  I never went in
much for black and white books, so If I was still collecting at that time,
( & I couldn't cause I was away at college without an LCS ), I would've
bypassed that stuff for sure.

I enjoyed the entire Silverwolf line, including Grips (not pictured), and I liked Phase 1 too.  I just had a thing for Super hero teams, especially those I was not familiar with.
