Back in the '80's there were a number of alternante/independent comics being published, with most of them being in black and white, and these are just a few examples of them. Some were successful (such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), but compared to the "Big" comic book companies, these comics were not always the best in regards to artwork or quality, but they were, in my opinion, beacons of hope (or perhaps opportuntiy) for many would-be artists/writers to get their own creations published and out there for all to see.
Not having collected comics since the mid '90's I don't know if comics like these are still around, but I'm guessing they are not due to the bubble bursting in the '90's, causing many comic book companies to go out of business. I feel this is a shame, since it was a creative outlet for many. Even though there are people today producing comic books for the Internet (electronic comics), to me this is not the same, since part of reading a comic book is being able to hold it, with the artwork right in your face, mixed the smell of the paper/printing (you know what I am referring to).
These comics books bring back good memories for me and I am sure for many of you. I was glad to see one of our own here get his opportunity to have his story produced with Mr. Byrne's artwork (FX), which gives me hope that a story I am working on will someday see print, not with one of the bigger companies, but as an "alternate" comic book publication.
Edited because the line of titles was so long, you had to side scroll to read the text below it. Fixed. ~ Matt
