Interesting to see the variations that have cropped up on the Superman costume over the years, including a rather old comic cover where Superman has an S on his belt buckle, so maybe that was when everything started going wrong decades ago

••

That cover is not as old as it looks. It was done for a tabloid in the 70s. (Originally, so the story went, Norman Rockwell was supposed to paint it!!). And the S, you will note, is not the chest emblem repeated.

Over three decades old... I'll call that old :)

Although I must admit, I do like the S-Shield belt buckle. When you guys started going on about it, I had absolutely no idea what the old one looked like. Looking at those pics, it looks like a pretty boring belt buckle. I can definitely see why some people might want to jazz that up a bit.

It's sort of like Batman's utility belt, which often has a standard issue belt buckle, but I think it looks great with a bat symbol there.

It's a minor tweak, but one I think adds a lot to the design.

According to Superman: The Complete History, the cover was actually painted in the early 40's.

By the "cover", I meant the cover art.

Not what I heard at the time, but that would make a kind of twisted sense. Not having Rockwell's painting, DC pulls something out of the archives -- something done before the "model" was set in stone.

It does have a "Shuster" quality to it, at least the face.

I'd say if you're worrying about a belt buckle being "boring" you're directing a whole lot of energy into the wrong place!

That cover seems to have a signature in the lower right corner. I have had that Treasury-sized comic a few times before, but unfortunately I don't have it now to verify the artist. I do think it is either Joe Shuster or another artist painted it based off of a Joe Shuster sketch.

A whole new generation of Superman fans-- thanks to a really awesome beltbuckle.

If they'd only paid more attention to the story...

comicbookdb.com credits "Hugh J. Ward" with that cover.  Never heard of him.

Crap! I recalled that I might have that Treasury comic with some pages missing or something in storage at the shop (I can't bear to throw away some older comics even when they aren't complete). I did have it, but most of the front cover was cut away, including the area where there appears to be a signature. The back cover does have a smaller pen and ink sketch version, though.

The amount of energy I'm expending on this is microscopic (I'm currently doing about four things and gabbing about this is part of my break time). Merely pointing out that all the energy being directed toward hating the belt buckle by others seems rather odd to me, since the original was something that I couldn't remember.
