Except it's facing the other way.  The S on the cape is redundant in the same way the spider symbol on Spider-Man's back is redundant.

Superman is an icon, much moreso than any other superhero.

Anyway, some posters stated their displeasure with the 'S' buckle.  BJ asked why and wasn't satisfied with the answers. That's fine; no one is asking him (or you) to see the problem with the 'S' buckle.  But to go on and say "So? I don't see the problem" is just stubborness.

Whether those changes fall into the same category as adding an S to Superman's belt buckle (when he already has one fifty times as big emblazoned across his chest), the fact remains that there were internal, story reasons given for the changes to Batman's emblem and the FF's costumes.

That's fine, Paulo.  You don't have to like it---I'm quite indifferent about it myself.

I don't mean to speak for BJ, but from what I understand he's wondering what makes it "WRONG", as if it's a violation of the character.  You and others can and have listed a few reasons why you don't like it---perfectly valid.  But they're reasons why you don't like them, not reasons the belt buckle is "wrong."

If I misunderstood BJ, I hope he'll correct me.

Whether it's the comics or the Bryan Singer movie, too many S's on Superman just smacks of complete narcissicism, especially the new movie version, where not only does he have an extra S on his belt buckle (to go along with his chest and cape), but there are hundreds of little S's imprinted all over his blue tights!!!

If that doesn't reek of "I'm Superman and you're not," I don't know what does.

Wasn't Singer's justification that the S was on the belt buckle because putting one on the cape would make it "too difficult" to do CGI animation?

Waitaminute, waitaminute... are you telling me there's no S on Superman's cape?

1)  I need my eyes checked.

2)  I now dislike that movie even more.

Was there an in-story reason for the Batman Emblem change before Dark Knight Returns?  I remember a 1960s story that hinged on the fact there was a change, but can't remember if a reason was given then or not.  I did like Frank Miller's reasoning for it.

Edit: A quick look around the web shows me the 1960s story was in Batman 183.  Anyone have a copy handy?

Well, luckily, the public rejected the awful Superman Returns film. Hopefully
the next team will realize it's not too hard to get it right.

It must be hard because no one's got it right since
1978.

"There has never been an S on the belt. "

So your aregument is your fear that if they will put it on the belt they will go so far as to put the it all over his underwear? Are you serious? Do you really think that is a legitimate concern?

Well, if it makes you feel better, now there has been an S on superman's belt, and the world has yet to come to an end.

*************

Why do folks feel the need to be contrary just to do it?

*************

How do you know that's what he's doing? Maybe it just really doesn't bother him. Is he not allowed to state his opinion?

What is in bold is not an opinion, it's a justification. It says exactly what you're saying, William, that BJ doesn't care. Maybe readers should care. Maybe there should be some standards set by people working in comics and pocketing a lot of money off these characters. I get tired of people just saying, eh whatever what's the big deal? Well, god damn it, there's a big deal when character integrity is trifled with, externally or internally. Grant Morrison would like to remove Superman's red trunks...no real reason, just to do it, just to see. No big deal? Grant Morrison is ready to write a Wonder Woman book concentrating on her unspoken bondage fetish. You see how one thing leads to the next thing? The heinous thing? Start with the belt buckle, end with Superman in leather. Not that worse hasn't been perpetrated on the character, so why not?

It's a not-so-subtle hint to the people checking out his "package" that he is Superman, in more ways than one.
