Morrison has said that his intent is to, ONLY FOR A YEAR, invert the traditional relationship of Batman and Robin, by having Batman as a lighthearted, joke-cracking crusader and presenting Robin as a grim and brooding loner. He's also stated that his intent is to have them rub off each other, and, after the year is over, have Damien as a more light and light-hearted character. Long term, I agree, it would be stupid, but, for twelve-months, I think it's a great idea.•• I'm having trouble with finding the "great idea" in having 16 different Bat-books out there, each with a different Batman. When I was introduced to the character, he was appearing in three or four titles, and he was the same guy in all of them. Even when drawn by different artists, he still looked like the same guy. This is something Disney figured out almost Day One, and DC seemed to understand for decades. Then, with plunging sales and a shrinking market, it suddenly becomes a good -- sorry, great idea to offer potential readers no solid base upon which to build their interest?

I agree, JB, that it's frustrating. I think that taking Batman out of Detective Comics and taking Superman out of Superman and Action Comics was a bonehead move (although others, I've heard, are praising them). I am liking Morrison's Batman and Robin and am digging the premise and execution (and, yes, the art), but I can imagine how the numerous Batman titles, some of which do not even star Batman, might be frustrating to new readers.

It's bizarre. They made a big deal after one of the _____ Crisis mini-series about stabilizing the product line by putting guys like Dini on Detective Comics and starting over with the Justice League. And I ate both of those up. But now, the Batman books are unrecognizable and I'm less likely to pick them up when Bruce DOES finally come back. And JLA went south very quickly--the way they hamstrung Dwayne McDuffie was a real shame.
This is a bit of a rant, but what is frustrating about the situation is that two years ago, it seemed like DC was trying to reset all of their books to be more accessible and iconic. That means they know how to do what I'd like them to do. It's not ignorance, they are choosing to turn out Batman books I won't buy.

BATMAN & ROBIN #1 was the best selling book in June by a considerable margin, so someone is buying it.

So what, Mike? Were the sales ever in discussion in this thread?
About the artists, whose work got posted in one of the previous pages, judging solely from the panels posted, I think a couple of them (the first and last) are not fitted to do superheroes. The first because that's just a guy in a Batman suit, the last because his style appears more cartoonish/comic/funny animal oriented.
The rest, even though their styles are not John Buscema/John Byrne kind of superheroes, they work. They show dynamism and... grandeur.
That's what we talk about here.

It deserves to be the #1 book. The first issue was my favorite single issue of the year so far. Just an amazingly fun book that's great to look at. I've gone back and picked up multiple copies to give to people at work and they've been pretty impressed. Not impressed enough to walk into a store on their own, lol but several asked me to pick up the 2nd issue for them

Although I enjoyed it as well, I was frustrated to finish the story in about 5 minutes.
Man, it seems to me that it took longer to get thru a 17 pager in the 70s!

While I admit I don't read any of DC's regular monthly/bi-monthly books
(with the exception of Jonah Hex) I'll give DC credit for seeing through with
the concept of Wednesday Comics.
Weekly comics with great artwork done by some very talented people
featuring stories that AREN'T tied into any company-wide crossover mess.

Wednesday comics is a good idea with pointless execution. It should be included as a free insert in national newspapers in an effort to build new readership. One of the biggest problems with the industry today aside from content, is the business model that encourages extorting more money from the existing readership rather than trying to build new readership.
