Quitely was great for Vertigo comics like 2020 Visions and Flex Mentallo.

Then, the lunatics took over the asylum.

Frank Quitely is extremely popular, at least on the internet. His work is highly praised on iFanboy, 11 o'Clock Comics, and Around Comics--all comic podcasts with their own websites and forums.

He was also pretty popular with the Weds night crowd at Golden Apple back when I lived in LA.

His work is okay, I guess. I don't DISlike it, but I also don't see why it is so beloved by so many.

••

He's a good artist (altho I think Geoff Darrow does this particular riff better). It's just that, when it comes to superheroes, he is badly cast.

That Superman/Bizarro cover neatly points up the problem, too. Ignoring the basic "lumpiness" of Quitely's characters, that cover shows us a moment frozen in time. As if someone with a super high speed camera snapped a picture of the action -- and thus removed from it any sense of action. Comic books, being flat images on paper with no real movement, have to invoke all kinds of visual "tricks" to create the illusion of depth and motion, especially when it is frantic, exaggerated motion that is being shown, as in a fight scene. Quitely's image works entirely against this. The elements are all encased in glass.

Batgirl and Catwoman running around Buck Nekkid at an upscale sex club.

Remember how cool is was when Stan and Jack used to do scenes like that?

Although an out-of-place comment <g>, I read FF 61 this morning during a break, the team fighting Sandman.

Awesome stuff, why can't anyone do comics like that anymore?

You're not wrong. I think Quitely has some talent and can tell a story, but for super heroes there's a whole language that he's missing out on.

I personally preferred the Lee/Romita team when it came to tackling buck nekkid sex kittens.

I nominate this as the worst art I've ever seen in a Batman comic. ANY Batman comic. Ever.

I don't know what Frank Quietly fans see in the guy's work, at least on superheroes. His Batman and Robin look like trannies on a float in homemade Dynamic Duo costumes.

Couple that with GOTHAM CITY SIRENS artist (March):

I can't believe how f*cking retarded this art is.

"Remember that name: BONEBLASTER!"

Sounds more like a name I'd want to forget as soon as possible and pretend I'd never thought of it.

The character was a joke character.  He was supposed to be an amateur idiot with sonic vibration gloves trying to become a big name villain, as you can tell from the dialogue.  He basically gets his butt handed to him...repeatedly...through the issue.
