Ed Benes doesn't get harassed because of his artistic skill, which is laudable. But that he's a cheesecake artist and over sexualizes his female characters to the point where it can impact storytelling. There's a difference between that and going after Frank Quitely because his art style doesn't mesh well with most people's expectations of superhero comics.

I would rather have cheesecake from people like Benes or Hyper people like Jim Lee draws, because they at least have action to them.  FQ just seems dull and lifeless no matter what he does.  I read Authority with him on the art, which isn't exactly a super hero book, and I thoght his art was hard to look at there too.

I strongly disagree with the notion that Quitely's work is "lifeless". I feel just the opposite.
I enjoy seeing non-traditional takes on superheroes very much. Things like the up coming Marvel Indies project is much more exciting to me than the traditional stuff that's coming out.

Don- well said. Yeah that's pretty much how I feel. If I want to see a traditional superheroes, I sure wouldn't pick up a new comic.

its definitely a mixed bag. With today's "modern" rendering and coloring techniques many of the traditional superhero artists work gets lost in translation a bit.

Mark Bagley, Tom Grummett, Dan Jurgens and even Mr. Byrne's (at times, please pardon my generalizing) work seems to lend itself more naturally to the traditional methods of inking and coloring from the 80's and into the 90's.

I compare an issue of Adventures of Superman by Grummett to a new issue of X-men Forever and I can't help but think that the Superman stuff, while on inferior paper, with less sophisticated coloring, is more appealing to the eye.

But maybe it is just nostalgia that is tainting my ability to objectively look at those books.

It is sad for me to think that a good stretch of time passed where people like Jurgens, Grummett, Breyfogle, Aparo, Paul Ryan, etc would have struggled to get work in the industry...is it is positive sign that most have found regular work again?*

**Acknowledging the passing of Mr. Aparo. I was born in 1980 and started reading comics circa 1987/1988... he is Mr. Batman to me...

I think there are websites out there that lead people to believe that stuff like what FQ puts out is good.

Arc, I'll just say that one of the new columnists on the website is likened to a cup of coffee.

Frank Quitely is extremely popular, at least on the internet. His work is highly praised on iFanboy, 11 o'Clock Comics, and Around Comics--all comic podcasts with their own websites and forums.

He was also pretty popular with the Weds night crowd at Golden Apple back when I lived in LA.

His work is okay, I guess. I don't DISlike it, but I also don't see why it is so beloved by so many.

I think you forgot the most important selling point: Batgirl and Catwoman running around Buck Nekkid at an upscale sex club.

I thought that would be really cool, but for some reason reading that just made me feel dirty, and not in the good way.
