I love how Toth has the highlights in Batman's cape spell out "Batman".
That's just fun.

That Kirby page is incredible! I'm sure that many of today's "sophisticated" readers would grouse about the lack of backgrounds though...

••

And that's with Cap on the loose! Kirby did an equally dynamic fight scene in which Cap has both his hands glues to a stationary bar above his head!

Another theory I came up with about the "vacuum sealed" costumes…

••

There's only one theory needed: THESE ARE COMICBOOK CHARACTERS!!

Boy, howdy. I also love how Archie Goodwin's first listing in the credit box is
"Friend".

Toth was really suited to Batman. I really need to see if I can track down
more stories of his. Such dynamism to his linework, but with that noir-esque
use of light and shadow that I like about his stuff.

There's almost no sense of motion in comics anymore (unless you're Flash).  Fights are too static.  I remember loving Defenders #52, one big fight between the Hulk and Namor.  Unthinkable to do today.

Oh, and it's definitely the neck.  I'd never noticed it before.  Thanks for demonstrating!

It's like speed/motion lines are considered a bad thing now.

lack of backgrounds though...

So that's what Liefeld was trying to emulate.

This altered photo of Routh does illustrate just how off
his costume and hair really was.

And how that still doesn't help because of his pencil neck.

Re: that Batman & Robin page (is that FQ?); "yawn" indeed; everything about it suggests nap-time.

The Cap/Batroc page is one of the most dynamic I've ever seen.

Keep in mind this is a quibble that I had with Christopher Reeve (and one exacerbated by the controversial diner scene in Superman II) but I believe Superman should look like a guy who you wouldn't want to mess with even if he didn't have powers.

He shouldn't look like he went to the same prep school as Bruce Wayne, for example (and sadly, Christian Bale looked like he could whip the crap out of Brandon Routh).

This is a guy who grew up on a farm. There should be a definite farm boy/captain of the football team look to him.

David Boreanaz has that (watch any episode of ANGEL -- you'll also see that he has the potential to also be a convincing "Clark Kent" -- shy, reserved, a little uncomfortable in social settings). Routh did not.

Except for that X-Men image, I like all the Quietly stuff posted.

That Toth page is fantastic~!  (Edit to add: IMO)
