Interesting. That was one of the first hard cover trades I had to have (maybe the second) and at the time I really didn't know the first thing about the artist or writer.

I think a comparison to a MAD cover seems a bit of a stretch.

Superman looks kind of baggy here.

Didn't get a look at his feet!

That's 'cause Liefeld drew his feet, and they were permanently shrouded in
mist.

Cheers!

Alan Davis is a really good artist. I like his latest works and also the first things he did in 2000AD in the early 80s.

IIRC, there was an interview where Grant Morrison said that Quitely doesn't really enjoy drawing superhero comics and that those fans (who were complaining about his constant lateness) should be grateful to have an artist like him working in the industry.

Do you guys think that the problems Quitely has with drawing superheroes is largely due to his lack in interest in drawing them?

I have to give Quitely credit for giving me the nudge I needed to quit my 20-year buying spree of X-Men titles. Thanks to Morrison, the X-Men stopped acting like themselves, but thanks to Quitely, they no longer even looked like themselves:

Costumes come and go, but this was beyond ridiculous. Jean Grey becoming anorexic and wearing tacky platform shoes? Cyclops developing pouty lips and a chin that puts Jay Leno to shame? Wolverine with no discernible hairdo or mutton chops, with a tuft of hair on his chin that screams "douchebag"?

So, thanks, Mister Quitely! You've helped me kick a long-stanging bad habit of mine.

Grant's absolutely right! We should be GRATEFUL that we ONLY have to look at his artwork five times a year. (did I not read that right?)

Rick in my opinion, Quitely is not drawing superheroes, and that's the problem.
I think he's drawing people with prune faces in superhero costumes. As far as his lack of interest in the genre effecting his work. I hope not. I would hope that as a  professional he would give each job his best. Whether he has interest in the subject matter or not. But then again, he misses deadlines, how professional can he be?

Wasn't John Buscema less-than-enthused to be drawing superhero comics?

That X-Men cover is ridiculous.  I mean, the endless, action-less poster-style covers are bad enough, but to actually produce a cover where the characters are standing around looking bored ... ??

Kevin, from what I've read you are correct.

That's the rumor, and it never showed. That's called professionalism. I think he prefered the sword n sorcery stuff.

And the storyline in the above is "Riot at Xavier's." Nothing says "Riot" quite like a bunch of people standing around, arms crossed, as if they are waiting to catch a bus!
