Oh--and Neal drew only two issues of Thor. The one inked by Vinnie was a
fill in by John Buscema.

Adams does get better, but the scripts also catch up to
Adams' art, and that helps a lot. Most of the stuff in
volume one is written by Bob Haney and comes from The
Brave and The Bold. Now, I'm a big Haney fan, but his
scripts tend toward inventive/gimmicky rather than
groundbreaking. He definitely has a camp side to his
work.
In volume two and three most of the stuff is written by
Frank Robbins and Denny O'Neil, who were consciously
moving Batman away from standard superhero fare into a
gritter detective milieu. The stuff in volume two comes
from a two-year period when not a single costumed super-
villain appeared in either Batman or Detective. The
stories in these two volumes are much more in keeping
with what Adams was trying to do with the art.
I think volume one also unfortunately has the most
redrawing by Adams. A couple years ago there was a
thread here where someone posted examples of the original
and redrawn versions, and it's not pretty.

Well, I don't have enough time to track down that thread today, but my Wednesday off should have a few spare moments to take a look for the differences!
Still, volume 1 was a beautiful book, and next Saturday can't get here soon enough for 2 and 3 and also Deadman to be mine!

Here's the thread with the before and after
comparisons of the redrawing, posted by Gerry.

(old timers on this Forum know that is far from the case!)
True, but for a while there, you were considered the best there is at what you do, by your fans and your peers, and that is quite an accomplishment, no matter what one does for a living. I know pride has its ugly side, but you should be proud of this and, like I've said before, for making a difference in the lives of so many children... not a bad day's work, JB. Not many people can say that.
