Sounds like us of a certain age (late thirties, early forties) all peg Whelan as the definitive John Carter artist. I imagine that many of you, like me, had all of the paperbacks sitting in their bedrooms in Grade 8, dreaming of Barsoom and two moons hurtling overhead.
I remember, to my frustration, that the Whelan paperbacks would fall apart only after a few readings. This is probably why I have never had any luck in finding many copies of these books in used stores. Anyone else have the same problem with their copies with Whelan covers?

I don't think Burroughs ever had Tarzan and John Carter cross paths, but he did have his Earth's Core stories cross over with Tarzan. Did those Dark Horse comics have the two characters? It looks like they made Tarzan and John Carter the same person based on the covers presented.
The Gridley Wave was used as a way to communicate in the Tarzan, Mars, Venus and Earth's Core series. So one could say they were in the same universe even though Burroughs never had Tarzan go to Mars or Venus.

Except for that insanely crazy lion's mouth on #1, I can't go wrong with Bret Blevins on John Carter --- Nice covers...

Blevins seems to have been inspired by Whelan's renditions of the
characters and creatures. His white ape and Tars Tarkas look very much like
Whelan's. His banth does seem to have a crazy grin, but the mouth is
supposed to be very big:
|
banth
this ten-legged beast is the most ferocious carnivore which roams the
low hills surrounding the dead seas of Mars. (Ec: In Giant of Mars the banth
is described as having eight legs in an editor's note.) It is almost
hairless, having only a great, bristly mane about its thick neck. It's long
lithe body is powerfully muscled, its enormous jaws are equipped with
several rows of long needle-like fangs, and its mouth reaches to a
point far back of its tiny ears. It has enormous protruding eyes of
green.

Some of you might be interested in this page:
