In some respects, the Adam Warlock thing was an early example of what
I call "tailcoating". FF fans thought Him was pretty cool, so he was
shoehorned into a storyline that really had nothing to do with him, but
which gained a kind of instant validity thru Him being there.

It reminds of when the Silver Surfer appeared and then the changes that happened later.

Would've loved to see where Kirby was going with Him and I do seem to remember the character also being in Thor and stealing Sif?  I'd have to get out my comics to look.

There was such mystery about the character, like so many of the characters Kirby would just pop into a book and then move on.  That guy was just bursting with ideas.

Imagine him today and given free reign to publish the stuff he wanted to do that was so far ahead of its time.  The whole mini-series thing was Eisner's and Kirby's wasn't it?  The Fourth World saga was supposed to have an ending.

Still, that is one beautiful commission and you have the Kirby Krackle going on in it.  Amazing stuff.  I'd love to see a book of all of these commissions.  It would be wonderful.  I'd buy one in a second.

Exactly Dan!  Marvel brought Kirby back to the Silver Surfer.

Michael,

Thor #163-166 or Thor Essential Vol. #3 or Thor Marvel Masterworks #8!

Well, if you are referring to Roy Thomas' re-interpretation of Him as Jesus Christ Superstar, I am inclined to agree.

Legend further has it that this so disheartened Kirby that, while he continued
to pencil FANTASTIC FOUR, he stopped creating new concepts for the book,
which is why his last 30 issues or so are mostly recycling.

I am still amazed about the edict that came from on high at Marvel regarding FF #94-101, i.e. that single issue stories were mandated because they would supposedly sell better than multiple issue arcs.  Truthfully, #94 happens to be one of my all time favorite issues of the FF.  Agatha Harkness and Ebony are a class act!  The rest of the singles are okay, but not among my most memorable.  However, issue #90-93, which preceded the change, was totally stellar!  Skrulls, gangsters and gladiators!  I just can't imagine that after such a great 4 issue run that the "powers that be" would call for an end to multiple issue arcs.  Of course, I wasn't paying the bills back then, so perhaps a change was needed to boost sales.  But as a reader, I am thankful that trend didn't last, as #102-104 and following demonstrates.  Once in a while it's nice to have a really good one issue story line.  But normally, the FF deserve to have their stories spread out over a few books to enhance their cosmic drama!

If Adam Warlock and Kismet took on a horde of giant ants...

would that be Him and Her against Them?
