Legend further has it that this so disheartened Kirby that, while he continued to pencil FANTASTIC FOUR, he stopped creating new concepts for the book, which is why his last 30 issues or so are mostly recycling.
I am still amazed about the edict that came from on high at Marvel regarding FF #94-101, i.e. that single issue stories were mandated because they would supposedly sell better than multiple issue arcs. Truthfully, #94 happens to be one of my all time favorite issues of the FF. Agatha Harkness and Ebony are a class act! The rest of the singles are okay, but not among my most memorable. However, issue #90-93, which preceded the change, was totally stellar! Skrulls, gangsters and gladiators! I just can't imagine that after such a great 4 issue run that the "powers that be" would call for an end to multiple issue arcs. Of course, I wasn't paying the bills back then, so perhaps a change was needed to boost sales. But as a reader, I am thankful that trend didn't last, as #102-104 and following demonstrates. Once in a while it's nice to have a really good one issue story line. But normally, the FF deserve to have their stories spread out over a few books to enhance their cosmic drama!
