Costco and Wal-Mart both retail a *massive* stock of
paperbacks and hardcovers. While they might pick and
choose what they'll stock, I highly doubt that it's
possible in any way for them to dictate to the publisher
the content of say, the latest novel from Stephen King.
Assuming that comics sold in these outlets adhere to the
Code of yore, I see no reason to believe that there
would be any attempt to dictate content any more than
they do for their book selection.

Dictating content doesn't have to come down as a directive from corporate.  It can come in many forms.  One such form is a huge chain of stores like Wal-Mart or Costco refusing to carry an item.  When asked why, they can give several factors including content of the item.  While not directly saying "change this content and we'll carry it", a company like Marvel or DC can internally decide that it will change it's content so that those stores will carry their product upon resubmission.

Didn't the Ultimate line start out as a deal with Walmart? I wonder how long it lasted considering the content.

That's true Matt, I guess I'm just banking on a return
to code-approved books being enough to stay in Wal-
Mart's good graces and avoid any interference.

Obviously sales at Wal-Mart were never enough (historically) for Marvel or DC to worry about making a brand wide change for, else they would.   I'm sure the bean counters at Marvel and DC, especially Marvel who has stock holder to answer to, would have assessed the pros and cons of making changes to books if having Wal-Mart stocking them was that great a sale.
