You know, what I'd like to see is a test given to any writer getting into comics...before they are allowed to write any icons, they are given, picked at random, a set of characters and told to create a 22-page (or however long comics are supposed to be) one-shot one-and-done story introducing the characters effectively, pitting them against a viable threat, with a balance of action and characterization while also setting up the following issue.
Pretty much standard issue fare back when...I just want to see guys pull it off now!
Best examples I can think of: JB's Great Lakes Avengers debut in AVENGERS WEST COAST, and ish one of AGENTS OF ATLAS.
