I was looking at the incredible Defenders commission recently posted and
thought about what an odd mix of characters the Defenders was. This led
to me being reminded of the Champions and thinking about how it was
even more odd combination of heroes. I mean, Ghost Rider, Hercules,
Black Widow and two of the X-Men? It seems so random...

I read that the reasoning behind the Champions was that these were five
heroes no one was doing anything with-- so why not team 'em up and
see if they stick!

Anyway... if you were offered a Marvel or DC book tomorrow (with the
idea that you could have free reign) and were told you could put together
a team of five heroes with nothing in common, which aren't being used
ina regular title today, which five would you pick?

This doesn't say it's directed to JB, so I'll assume you're asking everyone.

For DC, I'd go with Steel, Thor, Bumblebee, Solomon Grundy, and Atom Smasher. By the end of the second issue though, I'd have Grundy revert to his evil ways and the team's raison d'etre would become stopping Grundy. At that point, I'd add the Metropolis Guardian to the team.

Would Grundy have been replaced by the Space Phantom in that second issue? I suppose Deadman would work as a substitute.

Puck, Tigra, Sunspot, Spitfire and Hank Pym as GiAnt Man.  I don't think any of these characters are currently being used, but I havve an ever changing stable of favourites to replace them with.

For DC Blue Beetle, Ultra Boy, Brain Wave jr. and Zatanna

Marvel is an odd duck for me, all the different combinations, I think of sound to much like the a Defenders type teem.

Marvel: A tangent occurred to me that Rick Jones is consumed by some sort of unknown cosmic event, splitting into five separate entities: the golden age heroes that he'd previously generated when infused with the Destiny Force... hey, what a name for a book!

DC: Gunfire, Traci Thirteen (Girl 13),  Ghenna, Natasha Irons, The Heckler

Yeah. JB used Thor in Jack Kirby's Fourth World. Gaiman used a different version of Thor in Sandman. The JSA were briefly stuck fighting Ragnarok for the rest of eternity. So there's precedent for Thor in DC comics.

Don't read much mainstream so these characters may in fact be "in use"

Marvel: The Black Widow, Sunfire, Jocasta, Brother Voodoo, and Starfox

DC: Firestorm, Metamorpho, The Creeper, Black Lightning, and Cyborg

Thor does appear in ALL-STAR SQUADRON at one point as well.
