JB, did you take any issues you were especially proud of
and ask your parents to read it?

I think this is my first time seeing this issue. Hmmm... Those who think the
Angel's abilities were in need of a boost probably missed this issue as well.
He looks plenty tough on page 10!

Loved this when I was a kid. I traded it with a friend for some stupid reason
and never did get another copy. Of course, this was back when I was buying
comics at the corner store: when the issue was gone--it was GONE!

There's a Dumb Story that goes with this issue which, alas, reflects upon
much of the Madness that would follow.
On one of the non-posted pages, there's a scene where a rocket is being
launched, and, as plotted and drawn, Doc Samson races to the pad, leaps
up, and grabs onto the rocket. A moment later, the Hulk does the same
thing, but since the rocket is much higher when he jumps, he barely makes
the catch.
Shooter saw this and demanded the panels be redrawn. "This says Doc
Samson is stronger than the Hulk!" he said. Roger Stern, as writer, Bob Hall,
as editor, and several staffers who had seen the pages argued that this was
not at all the case -- the Hulk leapt after Samson, so the fact that he
caught the rocket at all showed that he was the, well, strongest one of all.
We won to the extent that I did not have to redraw anything, but the page
was cut up and the panels repositioned, and Shooter thus satisfied.

Hmmmm, Shooter must have had a stroke when Samson landed that punch in JB's run on the Incredible hulk!

Thinking about it, he does that with everything he inks. +++++++++++++++++++++ Matt, I strongly, and fondly, remember Layton inking Barry Windsor Smith and his inks were spot-on perfect. Yes, Layton did indeed leave a strong influence on any book he inked, but let's be fair, neither JB nor (and especially) JRjr were nowhere near their peek. And, quite frankly, I saw more Byrne with Layton than I did with other inkers at the time. As for Layton' pencilling abilities I am far from impressed. His Secret Wars were awful and his Hercules were just OK.

I remember this issue fondly. A friend had it in his comic stash. It may have been the first Byrne comic I read.

FYI, this story was reprinted this past summer in Giant-Size Incredible Hulk #1. This issue also included a brand-new Hulk story from Roger Stern.
