I've often wondered if artists use gay porn and gay (not) porn pictures and magazines as reference material when drawing comics.
I have to say that in this issue -- there are a lot of "gay" poses, etc on Angel, and by that, I mean the stereotypical image of a bare chested man posed for a gay photo shoot.

Yeah, it's interesting how sometimes you get guys who are liked by the fans, but not by their peers. Based on letters pages of the time, Layton seemed to be very popular with the fans (at least the ones who wrote letters). But I've also read negative comments about his inks by Joe Staton... Layton was apparently taken off All Star in part because Staton was unhappy with the inks. It's kind of like Vince Colletta, another guy whose work was popular with many readers but pretty much universally disliked by his peers.
I remember years ago in Fandom Confidential, Jim Engel and Chuck Fiala made a joke about JB and "Layton homosexuals"... I'd always wondered what that was about.

A Gay fan told me once that he was surprised -- and a little disappointed --
to learn that I am not Gay. Based on all the eye-candy I'd done with
characters like Angel, he assumed I was entertaining myself! "Nah," I said.
"I just thought I'd give my female fans something to look at!"

One of my all time favorite comic books. I love the writing and the art. I wore one copy of the book years ago and had to hunt down a replacement.

Well, even though I understand the critiques, I gotta say: As a huge fan of both Byrne and Layton growing up in the '80s, and the fact that I never owned or read this Annual, this thread is a special treat.
Despite the art quibbles, the 10-year old fan inside me thinks these pages look phenomenal!

Many many many years ago (over 20 by now) my father gave me my first
piece of original art and it was from this very issue. It is the page where the
Hulk craws out of the water onto the ice raft with Angel and Iceman.
I did trade it away a while back (I stil have some regrets about that) but that
trade did eventually lead to getting a Kirby page from the first X-Men issue I
ever read issue #8. So it was a good deal Byrne Hulk for Kirby X-Men.

I've got a truckload of nostalgic affection for this issue, and even now -- accepting completely JB's take regarding the inking -- on the merits I still think it's smashing. [No pun.]

This is my favorite Hulk annual. I've been saying it for years, but it was JB that improved the model of the Hulk. I always loved how his Hulk's arms had a simian quality to them. This always made some sort of comic-book sense to me as I always perceived the Hulk's physical manifestation to be representative of a man in prehistoric times.
