What a wonderful discovery these Marvel Tales were when they popped up at my local newsstand. It was like getting a new JB comic every month in addition to the ones he was currently doing at the time. Hey, I hadn't read them, so they were new to me! Great memories. Thanks Flavio (and, of course, JB!).

Thanks, JB. It's cool to know that even before I'd read a Spider-Man comic drawn by JB, he had already "defined" the character for me (based on the corner box image).

So much is right about that picture: He not only looks Spidery, but he looks like a kid (even though you can't see his face). There's a "body langauge" there. Excellent!

When I was a kid, I loved Spider-Man's pose on that corner box.

If someone wants to search for the previous MTU issues reprinted later on MARVEL TALES, here are the covers:

MARVEL TALES was very useful for we Italians in the '90s: when our Spider-Man chronological reprints started, Marvel hadn't most of the original print materials anymore, so the Italian publishers had to use the MT ones. At some point, they had to skip MARVEL TEAM UP # 9/52 because they were never reprinted in the US... so, they continued the series with the Clareomnt/JB/Mantlo/Buscema issues.

In this instance, I much prefer the original printing of MTU to the reprint in Marvel Tales.  They were using a different printing process by that point, but hadn't turned down the dial on the colors.

Love the MTU run!  I especially like Dave Hunt's inks giving everything a smooth, clean look.

This story was not the first Byrne story I bought, but it was where I decided that I had to check out anything else he worked on.  Sadly, I would wind up not being able to get most of the MTU run first-hand thanks to crappy newsstand distribution.  Thank goodness for comics shops.
