If your point is that comics has long seen its golden days, I agree.

A few names: Alex Raymond, Lee Falks, Ray Moore, Phil Davis, Dan & Sy Barry, Al Williamson. And a few others...

Stephane, you mention Ray Moore and Sy Barry, but you skip over the 3rd classic Phantom artist - Wilson McCoy, who did the art that you posted. A lot of great artists on those strips (as well as a lot of great seldom credited ghosts).

"Defenders of the Earth! Defendersss...."
******
An interesting factoid I discovered when watching the DEFENDERS DVDs is that the theme song was written by none other than Stan "The Man" Lee!

DOE was my first exposure to the characters and I thought they were great. I had the action figures of the three main heroes (plus Ming). Then my father explained me that, when he was a child, hey were very popular in Italy and he had the comics. Unfortunately for me, he belongs to that generation of readers who trashed their comics or gifted them to younger brothers, so I haven't anything of that stuff. Luckily I found various reprints during the years!
FLASH GORDON is still #1, with THE PHANTOM as a close second. No big love for MANDRAKE, actually.

I know Flash Gordon pretty well (although mostly from the serials and the movie) and I'm familiar with the broad strokes of The Phantom.
But, what's Mandrake's shtick? Who's the creator primarily associated with him? Aside from being able to pick the character out of a lineup I don't really know much about him.
