Is there no love out there for Jerry Ordway's fine '90's effort?

The current "Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam" comic looks good to me.

Speaking for myself the 'lightning shooting off the costume' and the 'long hair teased up like a wildman's' were more of a concern than Billy having a cell phone and don't seem like ''appearance of change' sort of ideas.

Why do fans get so pissed over the appearance of change?

What I can't understand is why every time a character seems unpopular, some hot shot creator walks in with a 'brand new take' that will make the character 'fresh'. Usually, this 'take' involves concepts that would probably work better on a new creation, rather than forcing them awkwardly onto a 'classic' character.

The way I see it, if Captain Marvel can't sell in today's market of hyper-violence and 'real' super-heroes, DC should stop trying, rather than publish some rubbish that will probably tarnish the property even further. Eventually, the market might swing back, and kids will want to read about the Big Red Cheese again.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but Jeff Smith wrote and drew a really
fun four-issue series last year with a modern retelling of Captain Marvel vs.
The Monster Society of Evil. It goes without saying that the artwork was
great, but it was a really fun story, too, suitable for all ages.

As always, Mr. Greenberg, a man of impeccable taste; I salute your perception.

And Jeff Smith's mini was enjoyable, but I do think his Mary was too young.

Captain Marvel and Spider-Man constantly vie for the "favorite superhero"
spot in my heart, though Spider-Man usually gets the nod just because
there is so much more material out there featuring him that the Big red
Cheese.

Like Glenn, I enjoyed what Jerry Ordway did with Captain Marvel as well.
(The sharing of the Shazam power was a bit of an unexpected wrinkle!)
However, I still think that Captain Marvel and Plastic Man would work better
in a world of their own.

I liked Ordway's Power of Shazam, too.

I haven't yet seen Jeff Smith's book but I do have the first 2 issues of Kunkel's new series. Other than wondering why Mary is so tiny I've enjoyed it thus far.

The 90's series with Ordway was worth the admission price
just for the covers alone!

I really did enjoy the hardcover especially.

Cap is one of those heroes I think should be drawn "on-model".

Ordway's work really was one of my favorite titles and I left comics not long after it ended.  I "knew" CM when I was a child, though I never read one of his comics.  So I wouldn't have known what to ask for in a CM comic. When Ordway's book came out, the setting just felt right to me. It also seemed a bit timeless with what small updates were made. And I liked that there was little cross-over with the DCU, yet it wasn't impossible. It made the crossovers feel special.
