Art Spiegelman won the pulitzer with MAUS, I wonder what JB could do following that path.
****
Maus was originally published in serialized form; Spiegelman later collected it and reworked it sligtly.
I point this out not to be pedantic (though I am nothing if not a pedant), but because great art can originate in serialized form just as it can originate in long form. I would love to see a John Byrne original graphic novel of 100 or more pages, but it's not because there's something inherently better about the longer format. There are great short stories and there are great novels; there are great individual issues of comics and there are great graphic novels. Whatever is John Byrne's next project, I hope he picks the format that is right for the story he wants to tell; whatever format that is, I will check it out.

Count me in for a JB original graphic novel (surprise, surprise.)
A lot of Star Trek fans must be aware of JB's Romulans and Gary Seven stories. They could be a very receptive audience for his "Space Queen" novel.

I like the idea, but I think I am more excited about your finishing Next
Men or working on some new material than I am about the format
Ted Pugliese
...................
I agree with Ted about the format. Although my wish is for Danger
Unlimited.
I remember John saying in a column that the absolute worst way to get
him to do or not to do anything is to tell him he "better not".
John, you better not do Danger Unlimited! (Smiley Face)
Whatever it might be I'm there.

After jumping back into the monthlies for the past two years, I've decided to wait for the trade (that is, if I bother at all). I would love to see JB producing vast EPICS!

I like the monthly serial format; my only problem with it has to do with the economics and distribution. Artistically, I think it's as legitimate as anything else. Dickens wrote serials.
I'd like to see the best of both, and do a series of trades. There's not many people that could pull it off, but JB might be one of them. My vote, for what it's worth, would be for something literary, classical, perhaps with a twist (like an updated setting). But something that would get into the libraries, and perk the interest of mainstream critics and readers. Do an end-run around comic book fandom.
JB, how long would a 100 pg book take you? (My guess is you could get out 3-4 issues a year.)

I've been suggesting this for a while: do the rest of Next Men as a big 500-page phonebook! It would send shockwaves through the comicsverse...
If that reached the results you'd set for yourself, then follow it with other massive paperbacks with original stories - future Elizabeth sounds great!

If you have to enter a specialised bookshop now to buy comics, it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep the ancient newspapers stand format Why not simply sell books ?
I would love to get my new NextMen stories in 50 or 60 pages episodes.

Of course count me in too with whatever JB produces, whether long form or short form/monthlies. The long form OGN sounds interesting though. I would like to see Next Men finished, but this Star Wars version of Elizabeth sounds amazing, and I hope he actually does do that in some version!

A Stand Alone paperback comic book is the next logical step for your work, JB.
You are one of the few artists in the business who could do this and still keep up a proper schedule. I can imagine the next few "issues" of Next Men coming out as 100-page comics, on a once-a-quarter schedule.
Or a series of graphic albums coming out on a similar schedule, but with whatever ideas you had: a few issues of a longer work, followed by a couple of stand-alone stories, etc. I could see you filling up a shelf with these comic book paperbacks, just like Moebius has done.
Again, if this is something that is up for a vote...I cast "Aye!"

Please god no LOTR.
How about this, JB? Begging, I mean pleading for your touch:
This is a cover of a Howard Chaykin adaption??? Never heard of that before.

Perfect example, Chad!
Back in the late 70s, Chaykin did several comic book paperbacks in a row. "Empire" with Samuel Delany and "Swords of Heaven, Flowers of Hell" with Michale Moorcock, both original works; and the adaptation of Bester's "The Stars My Destination." All painted, and all three published within a year (don't know how long they took to produce, tho).
When "The Stars My Destination" came out in the 70s it was the first of two parts, but the publisher went out of business before they could get to the second part. It wasn't until the early 90s that the second part was published, compiled with the first part.
This sort of sci-fi album is exactly what I see JB doing.
