Hey folks--

This is a bit of a left-field question, but I figured there were lots of classic-robot lovers in the forum. I've gotten my four-year-old hooked on retro-style robots, but I can't find any robot toys out there for him to play with. Most of the hits I get for "robot toys" are do-it-yourself kits or collectible tin toys, which he's just too young to handle properly. Basically, I'm looking for some good old-fashioned plastic robots he can knock around, smash into each other, etc. Any leads?

Thanks for your help!

p.s.: I've found some poseable wooden robots, but he's just not interested in them.

Can't get any more retro than "Rock'em Sock'em Robots" from the "other" guys. Remember having them as a kid. Should still be available everywhere. good luck.

Dave.

The Astro-Boy toy line from a couple of years ago were pretty cool -- Astro-Boy (is is hyphenated?) looks like a classic '50s retro robot to me.

Aren't there some transformer toys out there, or are they not retro enough? You're wanting Robbie Robot type stuff?

Rob- I collect robot toys, and I have a 9 month old. What type of old-
school style are you looking for? 40's japanese? 50's sci fi? New & cool?
As for new stuff from the past 10 years, you have the Robots movie toys,
the Disney show "Rolly Polly Ollie", and the "Meet the Robinsons"movie
had a robot in it...
In the 90's, Trendmasters made some cool Robby the Robot, and B-9 lost
in Space robot toys. They also dod some great Mars Attacks toys that had
neat rayguns. The Iron Giant toys were also very cool (but now very
expensive).

As for repro Tin toys, the prices go from cheap to pricey (but cheaper
then the originals cost you!). Try Schyllling for some great inexpensive tin
toys.

Many of the cheapest retro robot toys are no-name knock-offs. Which is
great when that makes them cheap! It can be hard, though, to find a
specialty toy store that sells them. You'll probably have to spend some
time on eBay if you want something that costs under $20.
Any more questions, let me know! I love this stuff!

Hey--

Thanks for the suggestions! (We've actually got Rock 'Em Sock 'Em already, but for some reason that hasn't caught my son's eye--he likes stuff he can bounce around with.) To be a bit more specific, I'm looking for something like the Schylling toys--classic '50s and '60s boxy robots with lots of gauges and dials--but made durable enough for a kid. I've got a bunch of those tin collectibles, and they just don't stand up well to roughhousing.

Maybe something like the old Shogun Warriors--big and durable--or even just a plastic bag full of cheapo plastic figures, like the old Army Men or Cowboys and Indians you used to find in toy stores.

Take care,

Rob

I remember getting "Zeroids" as a youngster, are maybe the zoids of the 70's.

Playmobile has had some cool robot figures. Yo Gabba Gabba (show on
Nick) has a cool robot character, and toys for that just cam out this month
(the one-eyed red monster is cooler IMO). There are some wooden robot
toys out there (I have some in my kids room) but I'm not sure who made
them.
There are some larger, fairly cheap plastic japanese toys out there.
Smaller then our bog Shoguns, but more recent and in the $20 mark.
Probably best to search ebay for Mazinger, Raydeen, Combatra, etc...

Retro plastic cheap robots for little kids are hard to find. Trust me, I keep
my eyes out for these things. Target has some great clothes right now
with robots, including the COOLEST tin robot pajamas...

I'll see if I can think of anything else, but tell me if you find anything...
so I can buy it as well.

Dave--

I ended up going with a posable Bender toy that seemed nice and durable. But in poking around, I came across these amazing little guys:

http://take-g.com/crafts/big.html

They're sold as individual works of art, and not toys, hence big, big bucks. A guy can dream, though...

Take care and thanks again,

Rob

Rob, are you familiar with the David Kirk book, Nova's Ark? I believe you can
still find toys around for it. He's got a neat robot dog, too.
