Love JRjr and have hoped for years that he'd try out DC for a couple of years and get to play in a new sandbox. Yes, I love his Spider-Man but I want to see his Superman, his Aquaman, his Hawkman, his Justice League. Does Marvel have him chained up in a basement or something?

Marvel did a weird thing when Mark Bagley left in that they didn't really acknowledge it and seemed to feel betrayed and let down. I didn't understand that, the man had done 15 or so years of great work for them and they didn't seem to appreciate that at the end. Though I could be misinterpreting Marvel's comments and actions at the time and they could have simply been trying not to fuel the hype machine and help DC sell some comics.

I still want to see him at DC just long enough to do GREEN LANTERN. And maybe a few months on Batman.

One of the TRUE signs of TRUE greatness is when one can praise another within the same field without feeling somehow threatened in any way.
Kudos JB!

(BTW, I picked up my copy the day it came out. And I was drooling when I read it.)

Anyone else notice the error in the MM volume where they slipped in a
penciled page from Al Milgrom's run on Spectacular Spider-Man and
credited it to JRJR? The two artists styles are so dissimilar that I was
stunned at the mistake! (I have fond memories of reading the Owl-
Octopus war circa Spectacular #72-79, which coincided with the classic
Stern/JRJR run on Amazing. Good times!)

Overall, I really like Romita's work, but I do feel like like the "blockiness"
or "thickness" (as JB calls it) in his figure work is a bit over the top. I
preferred the more restrained approach of his Daredevil days, and loved
his original runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men. The thick
figures limited JRJR's suitability as artist to more epic characters like Thor
and the Eternals, in my view.

In the last decade or so, in order to dial down the blockiness of the
slimmer Spider-Man character, JRJR has seemed to drawn him like he was
the Amazing Skinny-Man. MUCH too tall and bony. As JRJR captured
back in the day, Spider-Man is under six feet and dynamically spring-
loaded with agility, not a lanky, awkward skeleton on a string! I'm glad to
see somewhat of a return to his 1980s approach to the character's
musculature in the BND previews up thread!

Figure work stylization aside, JRJR is one of the best artists in the
business in creating strong atmosphere (I love his cover designs!) and a
sense of environment. I really appreciate all the work JRJR puts into his
backgrounds. As the MM interviewer pointed out, when reading a JRJR-
drawn comic book taking place in NYC, as a reader you where there!

Finally, after skimming most of the MM interview, I wish JRJR would
realize his own stature a little more and be a little more demanding with
Marvel about the writers he works with. The interviewer pointedly asks
him why, after their landmark run on Amazing, JRJR never worked with
Stern again and he basically says, 'I dunno.'

Don't just take what Marvel offers, JRJR -- demand they make Roger Stern
the writer on your next project! You have the power, trust me. Who
wants a Stern/JRJR Doc Strange book? I do!

Thank you for the heads up, JB. This is one of the many reasons I come to this board as often as I can. I get distracted and it's nice to be kept up on important releases like this. Also, I love the Modern Masters series. The folks involved do a great job with it. I own 5 issues.

I first saw JRjr's work on Iron Man, then Amazing with Roger Stern. Even then his stuff was spectacular, especially his Spider-Man run. But the guy kept getting better and better and better. Now his work just pops off the page. What an amazing evolution of an artist. He's the best of the best, definetly in the pantheon.

Marvel should do an Essential* volume dedicated just to his work alone. OK, back to read the pervious 4 pages. I got so stoked when I read this had to post right away.

edit: I meant "Visionaries"

Jeremiah, there IS a JRJr Visionaries. It's got everything from his very first published story (a Spider-Man backup short) to Daredevil, Iron-Man, the Hulk, more recent Spider-Man, the Punisher, etc. I hightly recommend it!

Hi Eric,

Great to hear about you again!

I think that I should have used the word "complementary" rather
"continuation". I only could read chapter 4 till now of your book since I
received it a couple of days before, and I had the feeling that JR jr and the
interviewer were aware of the RS interview since they talked briefly about
some items and then they went deeper on them, as if they tried to avoid
repetition and go deep in some stuff.

In other words, from my point of view, it's like RS interview is basic
course, and MM interview is like advanced. Great for me since it adds new
info and it has a different approach to it.

When both interviews cover JR jr's professional career, I suppose that is
inevitable to cover the same items, isn't? ;-)

Eric, keep the great work! And I'm still waiting forward to see a MM on
Sienkiewicz! 8) When you do it, I'll be glad to help with images. Visit my
CAF gallery to check which one they are. Some of them are iconic...

Thank you Joel and Anthony. Better add that to my Amazon order. In for a penny, in for a pound. It's JRjr, though; the guy just knocks my socks off. Well worth the money. I'll be sure to pick up Rough Stuff #3 as well.

I love John Romita Jr's work and I think he is one of the all-time greats. He must be the first artist whom I ever tried to copy, in the process of learning.
I love (and buy) almost everything he does, but recent things like Hulk and Sentry have been disappointing, storywise.
Me most favorite work of his remain Daredevil and Man Without Fear, probably due to the Al Williamson inking, which I think softened him up a bit.
My only "complain" is that his women aren't very attractive. Especially since his dad's women were extremely attractive. If he "fixed" that, he could easily be my Number One.
