We don't really have proof of that; however, virtually all comic book creators
skew proportions to make thier art seem cool. Even the great John Buscema
in How to Draw Comic the Marvel ways says that the average person is 6
heads tall, but to draw heroes 8 heads tall to give them more heroic
proportions. It's part of the genre.

I suppose Rob Liefeld simply had the logic, "Well, if drawing a person 8
heads tall makes them seem heroic, drawing a character 16 heads tall must
make them even more heroic! My heroes will be twice as heroic as any other
heroes out there!"

Yeah, but there's no consistency to Liefeld's anatomy. Nor draftsmanship. Nor skill backing up the stylized choices. He became a sensation so quickly, it's like he stopped developing as an artist. Plus, dude can't draw feet.

JR Jr. has all of that and more.

Which should I buy:

Gray Area or Kick Ass?

PS - Got the John Byrne MM today in the mail. Fantastic stuff! Great interview. I'm an interview junkie, and was pretty happy about the amount of ground covered. And the artwork? Well, hey it's JB. Can't go wrong. Nice job, guys!

Warren,

Both! ;-)

If you still are hungry for more after enjoying MM (hard to believe!), you can
find a short interview to JR jr in Back Issue #29 (last month issue) focused on
his X-Men run, since it's the mutants issue:

Link.

All right! Modern Masters Volume Eighteen is in my hot little hands. Great cover! I'm 20 pages in already. I really found it interesting how Jr. described growing up without much money, even though his father was an integral part of Marvel.

I enjoy the Modern Masters series because they read more like a conversation than an interview. Great stuff.

I would love some of those modern master volumes but my LCS doesn`t seem to order it. I`ll have to ask next time I drop by.

Romita Jr. rocks and is one of the top artists who understands a deadline and delivers. Here`s my contribution to the thread. Bought this pin-up the instant I saw it. I really wish I could get some more original art from him but he`s not really selling any.

That is nice (her ankles a a bit thin, but I'm not too bothered by them).

To clarify a bit, JRjr understands anatomy and perspective, and chooses to exaggerate some features of the human body.  Liefeld draws the human body as though it's two-dimensional.  Remember that Captain America drawing?  Both pectoral muscles are visible from a side shot when the far pec should be greatly minimized or even not visible.  JRjr wouldn't make that kind of mistake!

Like Picasso! He used to put both eyes in the profile view of the face.

Sadly, that probably wasn't a mistake.
