A very literal recreation was requested. Approx 11x17 inches

When this request came in, the first thing I asked Jim was if I could
modernize it -- that is, draw the two Things they way I would today, as
opposed to how I did it thirty years ago. But the customer wanted a precise
recreation -- and that brought a challenge all of its own, since I did not ink
the original, and much as I might wish otherwise, Joe Sinnott's line is very
different from my own.*

Something else about this one -- since Joe was the FF Guy back then, the
one who had been a consistent fixture on the book longer than anybody
else, it was not the habit of pencillers -- especially when doing breakdowns,
as I did on this issue -- to "tell" Joe how to draw the stuff. So the plate
pattern on the "modern" Thing is Joe's, not mine. I drew the shape of Ben
Grimm, the pose, but I left the "interior" line blank, knowing Joe could do it
much more efficiently than I.

* I wish I could ink like Joe, not that Joe inked like me!

The commissioner ought to be a happy customer then, JB. Looks great.

Though I have to admit that you've made me more than a wee bit curious about how a modernised version might have looked.

Is this done with a lightbox?

It would have been neat to see the Updated version.

Wow. That's amazing. It looks like a photocopy. Excellent work on re-creating Joe's line. Well done.

There goes another of my commission ideas! I'm a bit envious. I've loved
that face-to-face scene since I first saw it reprinted in a Comics
Interview. That image was my introduction to the "early Thing."

The reinterpretation is a great image. That I found the modern
"early" Thing just too monstrous for me to identify with as Ben Grimm
was itself a bit of a compliment.

I prefer the less severe Marvel Two-In-One hide or that which I later
saw used during your FF run when Reed tried to cure Ben.

Thanks for the info on Joe Sinnott's involvement in the original. I find
those tidbits illuminating.

Wow!!! That modernised old style Thing looks REALLY scary. Sort of makes me wonder if I've ever seen Mr Grimm looking so monstrous!

More Sinnott influence -- that cover was penciled by George Perez!
