Those inks on page 1 of ROM # 74 are sublime.

I love how you can see both Ditko and JB's touch. I really like how the hands came out. Ditko's expressive hands plus JB's polish are a great combination.

Also, this looks a lot like a JB lower leg - I could spot one of these a mile away!

Did you ever meet Steve Ditko in person?

••

Twice.

First time, a bunch of us were in Mark Gruenwald's office, and a "debate"
arose over whether Doctor Octopus still had the control wheels on the
front of his chest plate. I said yes, obviously, and had in fact made this a
key element of a recent (then) issue of FANTASTIC FOUR. Others
disagreed. Finally, someone said we should ask Tom DeFalco, as he was
writing Spider-Man at the time. We all trooped down to his office and
poked our heads in, asking him whether he thought Octopus still had the
control wheels. DeFalco basically shrugged and said "I dunno. Whadda
you think, Steve?" And we all turned in unison to see Steve Ditko sitting
in a chair by the door, out of our line of sight as we entered. Ditko said
"Whatever you need for the story."

The second time --- This is why I am convinced Steve Ditko probably
thinks I am the most ignorant man on the planet. I was heading out of
the the old Marvel offices, a few paces away from the elevators, when
Ditko emerged from one of the cars. I froze. Steve Ditko! Say
something! Say something!
Before I could find my antifreeze he said
"Hi, John. How are you?" Steve Ditko knows my name!! Steve Ditko
knows my name!!
I literally could not speak. Since he did not break
stride, and just kept going, I did not answer him, and by the time my
motor functions returned I was simply too embarrassed to seek him out
to make an attempt at an apology.

Haven't seen him since.

Since Marvel does a lot of work with Hasbro you'd think they could work something out.

And I'm in the middle of reading STRANGE AND STRANGER: THE WORLD OF STEVE DITKO and it's a very interesting read.

Does anyone know what prompted Steve Ditko to "return" to Marvel in the '80s?  I heard that Jim Shooter had a soft spot for him so he made sure he gave him work.  His ROM stuff was great.  At the time, I thought it was much weaker than the stuff he did in the early ASM's which I read in Marvel Tales, but I like that period of his work now.

I'm in the middle of reading Action Heroes Archives Volume II and the Ditko art is just amazing. He was great on Captain Atom, Blue Beetle and the Question.

I'd be curious to know what Hasbro thinks and knows of Rom. Rom was made by Parker Brothers which later merged with Kenner, which later merged with Hasbro. One would think that all assets would be included with each merge, but it could be more complicated then that.

or it could be as simple as Hasbro wanting a price that Marvel won't pay...

" Does anyone know what prompted Steve Ditko to "return" to Marvel in the '80s?"
read the fantagraphics book- you'll be glad you did. Ditko supposedly was in great need of work, and at the time was willing to go with the Randian belief that one could do corporate work if only the bare abilities of the worker were utlized. Basically, to me, it meant that you could work for "The Man" but only if you gave them the bare minimum of your abilities- just enough to get the job done.. Anything that involved your true abilities or unique creations had to be kept to yourself. So Ditko did very lose layouts, and Marvel had to find inkers to basically finish the layouts.
The lowest point appeared to be when Ditko pencilled a Tranformers activity book, cuz that was all he could get and was willing to do...
Yikes.
Eventually, Ditko didn't want to do anything for Marvel, or anybody for that matter.

Anyway, thats a really quick summary of just some of what the book discusses. Hell if I know what really goes on in Ditko's head...

That toy was a complete and utter flop if I recall, so they probably don't know much (and wouldn't care if they did!)
