Mr Byrne,

I recall you did a cover or two for the ROM series in the 1980s.  Do you, or did you, have any thoughts on the character?

I know the series ran for a long time, but I only enjoyed a few story arcs.  I'm curious from your viewpoint as a writer what you thought of the character.  I always felt the sci-fi aspect of the character was wasted trying to tie him into regular Marvel continuity.  I've often felt he should have grabbed a couple b-list Marvel characters and had some "space" adventures.

I'd be very interested in your input (on this childhood closet favorite of mine) from your writer's point of view.

Thanks.

I did the covers as a favor to the editor. 'Fraid it pretty much begins and
ends there.

I did like your inks on the issues pencilled by Ditko.

That was the third time I inked Ditko -- and the first time I was able to be
really faithful to the pencils. First time, on an old CAPTAIN ATOM story in
CHARLTON BULLSEYE I lacked the finesse to really give his breakdowns what
they needed. Second time, on an AVENGERS ANNUAL, I was instructed to
make the various characters more "on model" (When do you suppose was
the last time an editor gave that instruction?) On ROM, since it was "his"
book, I felt inking what Ditko had drawn was my primary mandate.

Not ever having been a ROM fan, I never got to see that. (And googling for a
sample of the interior pages is proving to be mighty frustrating!)

I'd love to have one of those Ditko Rom pages, especially the #74. That's the only way to get one, something an inker has sold.

ROM actually made the "secret invasion" thing interesting...

Ryan, you're a good man. Even if your avatar is a little unsettling to my
hetero sensibilities.

JB,

Did you ever meet Steve Ditko in person?
