The way they are drawn.
••
Statements like that really make me despair as an artist.

Well, on Orion and Batman, so far it's definitely 'hate', Michael.

Pope's Orion would make for a good evil twin story. Once again, I do like Pope's work. I just don't think he is best suited for standard super-hero titles.

I felt that there was a Kirby influence to Pope's art when I read his Heavy Liquid. I don't see it in the images posted here, though. But in that book, it was something about the way his characters were structured and posed, and something about the way he spotted blacks in his inks, that suggested Kirby at times. Or maybe an inker of Kirby's DC stuff?

John I am not a professional artist or writer and find it difficult to put into words the feelings I get when I look at Pope's work and the distinct Kirby influence I see. I am not going to use the "I don't know art but I know what I like" line. I see a dynamism to Pope's work that is very much like Kirby for me.
You're a veteran, a legend in the industry. I respect your opinions on artists.
What exactly causes you to despair when I suggest I see the Kirby in Pope because of the way The Avengers are drawn? I am serious. I'd like to know what you think of that Avengers page or the Orion. It would interest me very much.

like Pope's artwork and these renditions are a lot of fun; that said, this work
doesn't really work for mainstream superhero comics and I think that's what
makes the work interesting as a novelty.
Batman Year 100 was done as a one-off Elseworlds tale and that's where
Pope's woprk should stay if he's going to be doing superhero art. I know
nothing about Pope, but I suspect he's an indie creator and his artistic style
and interests are for that type of work.

I like Paul. He's doing his own thing. Why can't there be room for guys like this? He's somewhat sloppy and minimalist, but he's always been able to insert mood and atmosphere into his art...

Ha ha, mainstream comics? You mean like the current batch Marvel and DC are producing? Yeah, they're selling like hotcakes aren't they? I think artists like Pope and Rude are just too good for mainstream comics, same with Cooke and a few others. Most of what is published is junk and should be burned, lol.
Al we already know you don't like Pope. Tell us who you do like, besides JB. I'd love to know.

I enjoyed Pope's Batman. I don't think it would work in the Batman or Detective Comic titles, but as a stand alone mini-series, I think its great. It reminds me of Mike Allred but the art isn't as clean as Allreds. There's probably over 100 Batman comics published each year, and there's room to experiment with some different art styles. I understand the concept of miscasting the artist. I think Pope's art works well for this particular story set in the future.

Geez, lighten up, Michael! The skipping comment was supposed to be
funny.
My favourite all-time comic artist is JRjr. JB might be in my personal top
five though, somewhere.
Don't get so uptight over what I think, though. All I've seen of Pope is
what I've seen here in this very thread, and the link provided at the start
of it. I have no opinion of Pope other than what I've stated here. His
Batman designs are ludicrous looking. So was his Orion.
But that Wonder Woman doesn't look too bad.
He seems (from the piece linked at the start of the thread) to take what
he does seriously, though, and actually apply some thought, and I can
really respect that. Just because I disagreed with the outcome of those
thought process on his Batman doesn't mean I won't appreciate him
elsewhere on something his style is better suited for.
Maybe a dark, '40's noir detective piece, non-superhero, in black &
white. I could see that working quite well.
That is, from the extremely limited sampling of his work that I've seen so
far.
So really, chill. We're cool.
