Next, it looks like he didn't want to draw the camel's face, so he drew

Interesting comments, CJ. However, I don't know if I can agree with some of them. For instance, given how the camel is sitting, it would make less sense for him to be looking at Johnny's dad than simply look forward; the camel would have to twist his neck rather harshly to have his gaze fixed on Mr. Quest. I think Toth is more concerned with details about the rendition of the camel.

If Toth can find that much to complain about in Rude's stuff, I imagine Leifeld would make his head explode.

I love Toth stories! He was truly one of a kind, one of the few willing to turn down a substantial paycheck in the name of principle. He also had a wicked sense of humor: the one time I had anything to do with him was when I asked him for a pin-up for a WONDER WOMAN pin-up book. He agreed. This was his contribution:
...And it arrived, you should know, drawn on 20-lb bond typing paper, folded in thirds in a plain #10 envelope.

LOL. Seriously, though, I think he was hard on Rude's work because he cared. I don't think he would deign to even look at Liefeld's work.
Paul, that's a great piece and a funny story.

Holy cr@p! That is so brutal.
And I would have paid good money for Toth to have given me such an honest critique. I hope it worked for Steve.

Does anyone know the date of that critique?

Paulo -
It's dated Feb 15, 1986 at the beginning of the critique.

Was Toth asked by Rude to critique those pages?

Supposedly, Rude asked him for months to do it.
