I've been studying THE MOTH...first of all, the story the panels in question is a short 8 pager in
DARK HORSE PRESENTS...part of the explanation for some of those panel mistakes in that
instance.

Elsewhere, in the longer form stories, Rude's pencils and compositions are as tight as a nun's
habit.

••

A bad metaphor underscoring an equally bad point. That this is "only" an eight pager is an
excuse for turning in less than one's best work? I hope Rude himself has never said this!

In my collection of original art I have an eight
page QUESTION story drawn by Alex Toth. It's done printed size, in felt tip pen. That was
how he "cut corners". The layout, the design, the dynamics, the structure -- everything
else
is as crisp and clean and professional as anything else Toth ever did.

Dig it. . .

If Rude is already haphazard a "details" guy, the eight pager and making the right decisions and staying focused might be a problem. The longer stuff doesn't have the "crunch" I guess, the need to swiftly and accurately pinpoint the needed image and its parts. It IS still sloppy, no matter how you slice it, but I can't spot other examples in THE MOTH.

So when it's said the work is "rife" with the issues of Rude's sloppiness, he must have rectified a ton of them in subsequent stories.

Has to be from a Charlton book from the 60s I'd say.

Toth really is a joy to behold.  Whether he's doing a pin-up or a story it is always perfect.

Manuel Auad put out a few books on Toth and if you can get your hands on them get them.  I also believe Image reprinted Zorro in black and white.
