and since he rejected Fang's costume
precisely because it was not his own,

JB I could swear I read years ago the Fang costume was going to be hiscregular costume. Is that true or did I just imagine reading that?

You are correct, Victor!

One of Dave's last official acts as penciler of UNCANNY X-MEN was to redesign Wolverine's costume. The new suit was introduced right before I came aboard, Dave having shown me the model sheet on a trip to NYC earlier that year. "Here's Wolverine's new costume," he grinned. "It's a bitch to draw!"

Lucky he won't be wearing it long, then, I thought, and immediately pointed out to Archie and Chris that above and beyond apparently being "a bitch to draw" (not having done so, I did not know yet -- but it was!) it also exposed Wolverine's very interesting face and hair (also designed by Dave), which I felt was a mistake. Have Logan walking around with his face hanging out all the time and you lose the effect of him occasionally unmasking. (This was the guy who spent his first year in the X-Men without ever taking his mask off, remember!)

Archie agreed, and told me to put him back in the blue and yellow at the first opportunity. Which I did.

(Bit of trivia for those who don't already know: Sabertooth has the face I originally suggested for Wolverine, during that year he didn't take his mask off. I was going for something that looked "Canadian", not knowing that Dave had already worked up a variation on the Timberwolf character he'd drawn in his days on the Legion.)

You know something else bugged me about Fang's costume on Wolverine. It just seemed really unsanitary. For some reason Fang struck me as swimming with disease. Or at the very least someone whose clothes I would not want to wear without running them thru a washing machine several hundred times.

And THAT is why Wolverine wears those colors.

For a supposedly CANADIAN character, how messed up is that?

Just because he's Canadian doesn't mean he can't recognize and appreciate good college basketball.

Or does it?

Fang's costume could look cool with the Wolverine mask on it.

Tried it. Believe me, it just looks wrong.

Fang coulda used a mask himself.  UGGO.  And I bet if he's that furry all over, he was a little relieved to be stripped of his alien threads.

He looks very much like a werewolf.  In any case, I'm glad his duds weren't adopted as Wolverine's regular costume.

Wolverine's face being a riff on Timber Wolf's makes me wonder:

How would the JB-designed Wolverine brown/ochre costume look with the Cockrum-designed Timber Wolf charcoal/ochre color scheme?

I don't think there should be an X23... but given that she exists... the Fang
costume was a good fit for her.

X23 is a perfect example of Marvel losing the plot.

Well, in ahny case, I think the yellow and blues need to go permanently. Is
there any doubt in anyone's mind that the brown and orange duds are the
way to go? Besides the cool factor, it's one of the more original color
schemes out there.
